Sutton pleased with her new lineup so far

Lafayette head coach Amy Sutton got a glimpse of what life will be like without the super senior trio of Nikki McChristian, Brianna Fisher and Shaq Isom this past weekend when the Lady Commodores participated in Hickory Flat’s jamboree.

In defeating Alcorn Central 30-29 and Holly Springs 28-16 in two two-quarter contests, Sutton saw a lot of promise. (November 3, 2011, Page 8)

Lady Bruins eliminate LHS from playoffs

MADISON — Rachel Wenzel knew her team had its work cut out for it well before the team bus arrived on the gated campus of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Madison on Tuesday.

Her assumptions were correct.

The Lady Bruins were as good as their 16-match winning streak suggested and they did just enough to eliminate Lafayette from the first round of the Class I playoffs with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) victory. (October 5, 2011, Page 6)

Sisk’s all-around game keys OHS success

A team-first approach to winning basketball games turned out to be very successful for the Oxford Lady Chargers and junior point guard Erika Sisk this season. Not only did OHS win 24 games and advance to the Class 5A North Half tournament under coach Shayne Linzy in his second season, the 5-foot-4 Sisk was able to show her all-around skills better than she has before.

Sisk not only set up her teammates during games, but she was a driving force behind the Lady Chargers’ offense. She led the area with averaging 22.0 points per game and then added to that outstanding scoring ledger by dishing out 4.8 assists and grabbing 3.9 rebounds per game.

Lady Indians no match for LHS’ team approach

The  Itawamaba Agricultural Lady Indians definitely got the memo on Lafayette guard Shaq Isom: Pay attention and guard her close.

The memo on the rest of the team must have slipped through the cracks, though, as the Lady Commodores, behind a solid team effort, soundly defeated the Lady Indians 63-38 Tuesday night at the LHS gymnasium in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)

Isom leads LHS to 2-4A tourney title

Led by a strong defensive effort and an outstanding all-around performance by Shaq Isom, the Lafayette Lady Commodores captured the Region 2-4A Tournament title Monday night at Center Hill.

LHS defeated Byhalia 70-43 to finish as the No. 1 seed out of the region. The Lady Commodores (23-5) will host Itawamba AHS tonight in the first round of the MHSAA’s Class 4A playoffs and a win gets them closer to a return trip to Jackson to play for the state title. (February 15, 2011, Page 6)
