Kenny Brown set for Sunset Series in the Grove this Sunday

OXFORD TOWN – The 2011 Summer Sunset series rolls on this week featuring Kenny Brown, one of the veteran “hill country blues” musicians and a longtime partner of R.L. Burnside, bringing his mixture of country, blues and rock to the Grove Stage on Sunday, June 12. Page 8 has more information about Brown and the popular Sunset Series taking place every Sunday in June. (June 9, 2011, Page 6)

The Twilight Singers to perform at Proud Larry’s

OXFORD TOWN – The New Orleans-based, indie rock band The Twilight Singers will take the Proud Larry’s Stage on Wednesday, May 4. Special guests Margo and The Nuclear So and So’s are scheduled to open the show. In this week’s issue of Oxford Town, guest columnist Wright Thompson shares his thoughts about The Twilight Singers’ new album (“Dynamite Steps”). Thompson has set aside his ESPN responsibilities for a moment to share memories of a very special road trip with Twilight Singer front man Greg Dulli (pictured) and the first time he heard the band’s new album. Check it out on Page 7. (April 28, 2011, Page 7)

Spring Fed; Groundskeeper of Dreams

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – As we gather this weekend for baseball and boogie, a brief reflection on north Mississippi, this area, our dirt, this grass, our small postage stamp of native soul, is in order. In time-honored fashion, Dees’ neighbor, Smoke, went to Wal-Mart this week and bought a $150 mower and he’ll push it within an inch of its 3rd World/child labor/sweat shop/life. Check out Oxford Town this week for Jim Dees’ usual shenanigans as spring rolls in. (April 22, 2010, Page 9)

Book offers another way to experience the blues

Think the “blues” can only be experienced through songs and music? Think again – and read Editor Don Whitten’s review of “Delta Blues,” an anthology of blues stories set in and around the Mississippi Delta. Whitten mentions stories by the likes of John Grisham, James Lee Burke, Ace Atkins, Tom Franklin and Beth Ann Fennelly, and Alice Jackson. (March 26, 2010, Page 4A)
