Oxford’s track teams opened the 2013 season with a bang as both squads won Saturday’s Oxford EAGLE Invitational meet held at Bobby Holcomb Field. The Chargers more than doubled up second-place finisher West Bolivar (220-98) to win first place, while the Lady Chargers finished with 157 points, 25 more than second-place finisher Independence. CORINTH — Lafayette’s first trip to the MHSAA Class 4A North Half Tournament was shorter than coach Nacoma James and his Commodores were hoping for. Despite another strong effort on defense, the Commodores were unable to overcome a handful of empty possessions on offense late and some timely free-throw shooting by Noxubee County. The end result for the Commodores was a 55-52 setback to the Tigers, who will now play host Corinth tonight at 6 for the right to advance to Jackson.
Asked what it would mean to merely make the playoffs in boys basketball for the first time since 2006, the Commodore head coach said he felt like his squad was poised to carry over the success that has become synonymous with Lafayette’s other sports, namely football. ECRU — New Albany’s spell over the Lafayette Lady Commodores finally came to an end. It wasn’t easy, but the Lady Commodores weathered a 43-point performance from New Albany’s Jazmine Spears to post a thrilling 61-60 win over the Lady Bulldogs Thursday in the Division 2-4A Tournament.
The victory not only improved the Lady Commodores to 12-10 overall, but advanced them to tonight’s 2-4A title game against host North Pontotoc and earned them a home game in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs Monday night.

Lafayette’s boys basketball program continued to show improvement and a turnaround under second-year coach Nacoma James on Tuesday night in the elimination round of the Division 2-4A Tournament. Playing the host North Pontotoc Vikings, the Commodores were able to make enough plays, both on offense and defense, late to pull out a 65-63 win and advance to play No. 1 seed Tunica-Rosa Fort on Thursday evening. Tuesday’s win also advanced the ‘Dores to the MHSAA’s Class 4A playoffs for the first time in seven years. (February 13, 2013, Page 7)
A fast start to Friday’s home game for the Lafayette Commodores was negated by the quickness of the Tunica-Rosa Fort Lions. Lafayette led 9-2 in the early moments of the Division 2-4A contest but after a surge from the Lions later in the first quarter, the Commodores were never able to catch up. The end result was a 70-48 win for the Lions, who improved to 4-0 in 2-4A play and sent the Commodores to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in 2-4A.
Three players in double figures wasn’t enough to lift the Lafayette Commodores past New Albany Tuesday night on the road. The Bulldogs topped the ‘Dores 65-55 to drop them to 1-2 in Division 2-4A play and 8-6 overall. Montreal Nabors led LHS with 17 points, six rebounds and five steals. Lafayette earned a home sweep of Division 2-4A foe Lewisburg Friday night. The Lady Commodores ended a four-game losing streak with a 70-25 win over the Lady Patriots.
