Late rally not enough to lead OHS past West Point

A chance to climb back atop the Region 1-5A standings for the Oxford Chargers was ultimately dashed by the West Point Green Wave on Friday night at McAllester Field. Despite a late second-half surge on offense led by quarterback Guy Cameron Billups, the Chargers fell to the Green Wave 22-20.

Oxford (4-3 overall, 1-2 in region play) totaled 392 yards against a strong West Point defense, but in the end it was Green Wave quarterback Justin Cox and his offensive mates that were able to find a way to pull out the win that kept them atop the region standings. (October 11, 2010, Page 1B)

Hervey, Robles earn Co-POW honors

For the first time since the weekly honor initially donned the pages of the Oxford EAGLE last season, there’s a Co-Player of the Week.

Because one heroic play would not have been made possible without the other, both Alex Robles and Des Hervey have been named this week’s Player of the Week.

Water Valley’s kicker and cornerback/receiver came up big at the end of Friday’s 23-20 victory over Nettleton.

With the game tied 20-20, Robles, recently called up to the varsity from the eighth grade team, booted a 25-yard field goal to go ahead.

Four plays later, Hervey swooped around the right side of Nettleton’s protection and blocked what would have been a game-tying field goal to secure the Blue Devils’ victory. (October 5, 2010, Page 8)

Oxford cages O’Bannon, CHS Tigers

The Oxford Chargers’ 24-14 win over Charleston on Friday accomplished more than just revenge.

The win exorcised demons that had been with the Chargers for over a year.

Prior to the game at Bobby Holcomb Field, it was obvious the players were focused on gaining atonement from last year’s 31-13 loss and it showed on the field. (August 30, 2010, Page 1B)

Dean carries load in first scrimmage

Oxford High’s first football scrimmage of the 2010 preseason Friday night provided some positive results in all three phases for coach Johhny Hill and his staff to build on.

Some of the highlights for the Chargers’ first-team offense, led by quarterback Guy Cameron Billups and running back Mont Dean, was producing a combined four touchdowns. Also, the team’s main defensive unit was able hold the offense down on the goal line on a fourth-down situation.
