Lafayette’s D.K. Buford named Player of Week
It’s not often that a sophomore has the ability to make big plays, especially on a team that features two senior standouts on offense. But Lafayette running back/wide receiver D.K. Buford isn’t your typical sophomore and he’s not your typical athlete with just average speed.
What separates Buford from the rest of the pack is his ability to streak past defenders on any given play each Friday night. His raw speed, coupled with his great running instincts, showed up in a big way for LHS in its 40-11 win over Tupelo in the opener. Buford scored the first touchdown of the season for the Commodores, one that set up six straight scores, and finished with two touchdowns overall as well as 73 yards rushing and 37 receiving. His outstanding effort didn’t go unnoticed as he earned the first Player of the Week honor in 2011. (August 23, 2011, Page 8)
Turnovers, miscues doom Oxford in loss to Grenada
GRENADA — Turnovers and general miscues proved to be the Oxford Chargers undoing in their season opener against Grenada on Friday night. The officials controlling the clock on the field didn’t help matters either.
OHS lost, 16-15, in large part because of five turnovers committed during the course of the contest and some costly penalties that ended up thwarting potential scoring drives. (August 22, 2011, Page 1B)
Young Chargers give great effort in setback
Oxford may be young in spots heading into the start of the 2011 season, but those same youngsters showed they have some talent and grit in the right spots moving forward.
The Chargers may have lost their jamboree game, 14-7, to Shannon on Friday night at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, but coach Johnny Hill saw a good number of reasons to be optimistic about this week’s season opener at Grenada.
Defensively, OHS gave the experienced Red Raiders all they could handle up front, while the running game, led by senior tailback Mont Dean, produced more than a handful of successful gains against a defensive unit that returns everyone from a season ago. (August 15, 2011, Page 1B)

Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was named Player of the Year after throwing for 2,915 yards and 33 touchdowns for the 9-4 Chargers. Billups ranked second in the entire state in both passing yards and touchdowns thrown.
Joining Billups on the first team offense for the MAC team were senior wide receiver DeShaun McNeal and senior tight end Larry Pettis. Senior offensive lineman Terry Johnson was also named to the second team on offense. Johnson will be playing in Saturday’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Classic in Mobile, Ala. Wave crash Oxford’s 5A playoff hopes
One of the most successful seasons on the gridiron the past few seasons for the Oxford Chargers ended with a disappointing 27-12 loss to the West Point Green Wave in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field.
A good, physical gameplan helped lifted the Green Wave (11-1 overall) into the 5A North Half title game. (November 22, 2010, Page 6B)
Oxford hoping to break West Point’s Waves
Just moments after the Oxford lost to West Point 22-20 during the regular season, Chargers coach Johnny Hill told his team that he thought they would see the Green Wave again in the playoffs and at home no less.
His prediction ultimately came true as the Chargers (9-3 overall) host the Green Wave (11-1) in an important second round Class 5A playoff game at Bobby Holcomb Field Friday night. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)
