What pressure? Newalu confident heading into season as Rebs’ SS
Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco admitted on Monday that sometimes defense — well, reliable defense — can be taken for granted at times.
That was never more evident than in 2008, when the Rebels transitioned from Zack Cozart at shortstop to a combination of Sean Stuyverson, Tim Ferguson and Evan Button and the trio committed 27 errors.
The next two seasons, Ole Miss was lucky enough to have Kevin Mort restore order to the position and with any luck, the Rebels are hoping junior college transfer Blake Newalu will be an extension of Mort’s dependability. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)
More than just playing for fun
COLUMN: Fans in attendance of Saturday’s 7-0 win for the current Rebel squad over the alumni team got a glimpse at what the backbone of Ole Miss’ pitching staff will likely resemble when the season opens on Feb. 18 against Wright State.
Against the professional Rebel squad — which, admittedly, for the most part had not faced live pitching in over four months — Ole Miss’ three likely weekend starters and closer allowed just two hits during nine innings of work. (more…) (February 7, 2011, Page 2B)
Smith doing his best Bianco impersonation
Matt Smith has a completely new appreciation for what Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco goes through on a day-to-day basis.

Three Rebels excited about heading home
Sure the recently announced Charlottesville (Va.) Regional means a chance at revenge for most of the Ole Miss Diamond Rebels, but to three it has a little extra meaning.
The Rebels trip East will give Matt and Mike Snyder, as well as Matt Crouse, a chance to play in front of friends and family members, a chance most have not had considering the 12-plus hours that separate Virginia from Oxford. (June 2, 2010, Page 7)
Day 3: Auburn-Ole Miss Game Blog
HOOVER, Ala. — Ole Miss’ Zach Miller said on Monday he wanted the chance to play the Auburn Tigers at Regions Park during the Southeastern Conference. He’ll get his wish today. Kilcrease does it again, Rebs fall to Alabama
Alabama pitcher Nathan Kilcrease may be small in size at 5-foot-6, but he’s a giant against Ole Miss as he proved Thursday in leading the Crimson Tide to a 6-3 win over Ole Miss in the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Ala.
The Rebels dropped into the losers’ bracket for a 3 p.m. game today against Auburn, while Alabama is off until Saturday in action at Regions Park. (May 28, 2010, Page 6A)
