No. 16 Rebels have work cut out for them

Mike Bianco jogged out of Ole Miss’ dugout Thursday afternoon, saw several television cameras in addition to the usual group of reporters and asked anyone within ear shot if the No. 16 Rebels were playing the New York Yankees.

Close.

Rebels can’t hold on to claim series

Just a couple of inches either way and who knows how Sunday’s game could have turned out at Oxford-University Stadium.

Down to their final strike of the series, Auburn center fielder Ryan Tella hit a two-out double that soared down the left field foul line and barely dropped in fair between the foul line and sliding Ole Miss left fielder Tanner Mathis.

Tiger left fielder Cullen Wacker then hit a double into the opposite corner, scoring Tella to tie the game.

The second double ended the day of Ole Miss starter Mike Mayers, who had limited the Tigers to just four hits until the ninth.

With Rebel closer Brett Huber on the mound, Auburn first baseman Garrett Cooper hit a single up the middle, scoring Wacker to put the Tigers ahead of No. 12 Ole Miss 3-2. (March 19, 2012, Page 6)

Tigers running into SEC opener

Will Allen currently has his right ring finger coupled with his fractured pinky finger by two pieces of white athletic tape.

After this weekend’s Southeastern Conference opener against the new-look Auburn Tigers, Allen may need to ice down his shoulder.

The Auburn Tigers (10-7 overall) head into today’s first game of the three-game set leading the nation in stolen bases.

For a team that was once as likely to knock the ball out of the park as it was to swipe second, the rank denotes an obvious change in philosophy on The Plains. (March 16, 2012, Page 7A)

No. 14 Rebels earn three-game sweep

It’s safe to say nobody saw this weekend coming.

Did the No. 14 Ole Miss Rebels expect to claim their final non-conference series?

Of course.
