Fondren’s drive pays off for OHS Chargers

Oxford coach Drew Tyler knows a Most Valuable Player candidate when he sees one. After having 13 consecutive players who have won the EAGLE’s top boys basketball award over the years, Tyler has gained a great perspective as to what an individual has to do to obtain such recognition.

For 6-foot-2 OHS junior guard Justin Fondren, the recipe for success that ultimately allowed him to earn the 2011 EAGLE Player of Year award was his ability to do everything well. As Tyler explains it, Fondren is his best athlete, his best basketball player and best student all rolled into one. (April 20, 2011, Page 1B)

Water Valley wins district opener

The Water Valley Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils basketball squads got their District 2-3A seasons off to good starts with wins over South Pontotoc on Friday night. Water Valley’s girls were led by Ashley Phillips, who scored the game-winning basket on a layup at the buzzer in a 59-58 win. She finished with 22 points, while C.C. Phillips also scored 22 points. CHS Tigers no match for WVHS boys

The Water Valley Blue Devils basketball squad opened up the Valley Classic with a bang on Thursday, cruising to a 68-44 victory over Charleston at the WVHS gym, while the girls fell victim to too many turnovers in a 60-55 overtime loss to Charleston.

After mounting an early six-point lead after the first quarter, the Blue Devils’ offense never hit a lull and was able to extend its lead to as many as 36 early in the fourth quarter. (December 3, 2010, Page 9A)

WVHS hoops beats Coffeeville

Led by Eric Buckley’s 19-point effort, the Water Valley Blue Devils defeated Coffeeville 69-55 Tuesday night in the WVHS gym.

Devils win first game
