Nichols reflects on setting state record
A win, rather than setting a state record, is what Oxford High senior swimmer Matthew Nichols was hoping to achieve before he dove into the water to compete in the 100-yard breaststroke at Saturday’s MHSAA state swim meet.
Nichols not only won the event, he also set the state record in the event with a time of 58.12 seconds. The previous record was set nine years ago by J.T. Jones, who finished with a time of 1 minute, 0.75 seconds. Nichols also won the 100 freestyle at Saturday’s meet and just missed setting the record held by former Lafayette High standout Jeffery Phillips by 0.15 of a second. (October 27, 2010, Page 10)
Oxford girls win MHSAA swim title
One year away from the top spot was more than long enough for the Oxford Lady Chargers swim team.
After placing second to Tupelo a year ago, the Lady Chargers reclaimed first in Saturday’s MHSAA State Championship swim meet held at the Biloxi Natatorium, racking up 290.5 points compared to the Golden Wave’s 216. (October 25, 2010, Page 3B)
