Rebs persevere through weather to prepare for season

At times this preseason the Ole Miss baseball Rebels have felt like they called Minneapolis home instead of Oxford.

Due to the recent southern blizzards that shut down local school districts for days at a time, the Rebels have had a difficult couple of weeks leading up to Friday’s season opener against Wright State. (more…) (February 14, 2011, Page 8A)

College baseball will literally be on the clock this season as the NCAA has mandated 20- and 90-second clocks to be installed at all college baseball stadiums. (more…) (February 1, 2011, Page 9)

Smith doing his best Bianco impersonation

Matt Smith has a completely new appreciation for what Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco goes through on a day-to-day basis.

The baseball team’s annual end-of-the-fall three-game series lovingly called the “Pizza Bowl” commenced on Wednesday at Oxford-University Stadium with the Red team coming from behind to top the Blue team 3-2. (more…) (October 28, 2010, Page 7)

Rebs’ Pomeranz signs late-night deal

It went down to the final minutes, but Ole Miss pitcher Drew Pomeranz is now a professional baseball player.

Just before Monday’s midnight EDT deadline, the All-American pitcher signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians organization.

According to the Associated Press, the contract includes a $2.65 million signing bonus, which is just over the Major League Baseball suggested slot price for the No. 5 player ($2.52 million). (August 17, 2010, Page 6)

Goforth, Tracy hear their names called

Two more Rebels were selected on Day 3 of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Redshirt sophomore David Goforth was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 31st round, while right-handed  junior Matt Tracy was selected in the 43rd round by the Florida Marlins.

After struggling for most of the year — 1-6, 9.43 ERA — Goforth said he expected to go later in the draft rather than earlier, but added that he was still excited to be selected. (June 10, 2010, Page 6)

Day 3: Auburn-Ole Miss Game Blog

HOOVER, Ala. — Ole Miss’ Zach Miller said on Monday he wanted the chance to play the Auburn Tigers at Regions Park during the Southeastern Conference. He’ll get his wish today. Following what’s hopefully a brief rain delay the Rebels will get their chance to get back at the Tigers. The game is being televised on SportsSouth. (more…) (May 28, 2010)

Nelson stifles Ole Miss’ bats in 4-1 win

TUSCALOOSA — What a difference a year can make. Last year, Alabama pitcher Jimmy Nelson was the goat on Friday night for the Crimson Tide, blowing a two-run lead in the ninth to lose 8-7.

Fast-forward a year, and it’s hard to believe Nelson could have pitched any better.

On Saturday, the Alabama junior pitched what both he and head coach Mitch Gaspard termed his best outing of the season, silencing Ole Miss’ bats in their 4-1 victory.

Skyhawks no match for No. 16 Rebels

No late-game heroics were needed Wednesday night at Oxford-University Stadium.

The No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels took care of business early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings en route to a lopsided 15-6 victory over the UT-Martin Skyhawks. (April 29, 2010, Page 6)

Yarbrough lifts Rebs to win again

The Ole Miss baseball team hasn’t run out of its firepower. Two days after completing a three-game sweep of the reigning National Champion LSU Tigers, the Rebels scored 11 runs on 20 hits to defeat the Murray State Thoroughbreds 11-10 at Oxford-University Stadium. (April 28, 2010, Page 6)
