What pressure? Newalu confident heading into season as Rebs’ SS
Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco admitted on Monday that sometimes defense — well, reliable defense — can be taken for granted at times.
That was never more evident than in 2008, when the Rebels transitioned from Zack Cozart at shortstop to a combination of Sean Stuyverson, Tim Ferguson and Evan Button and the trio committed 27 errors.
The next two seasons, Ole Miss was lucky enough to have Kevin Mort restore order to the position and with any luck, the Rebels are hoping junior college transfer Blake Newalu will be an extension of Mort’s dependability. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)
More than just playing for fun
COLUMN: Fans in attendance of Saturday’s 7-0 win for the current Rebel squad over the alumni team got a glimpse at what the backbone of Ole Miss’ pitching staff will likely resemble when the season opens on Feb. 18 against Wright State.
Against the professional Rebel squad — which, admittedly, for the most part had not faced live pitching in over four months — Ole Miss’ three likely weekend starters and closer allowed just two hits during nine innings of work. (more…) (February 7, 2011, Page 2B)
OM Diamond Rebels begin work for season
Swinging the new BBCOR (ball-bat coefficient of restitution) bats that have been implemented by the NCAA for the 2011 season, the Ole Miss baseball squad officially got started on the practice field on Friday.
On Saturday and Sunday, it was the pitching staff that appeared to get the best of the batters in two intrasquad scrimmages as a total of 10 runs were scored during the two games. (January 31, 2011, Page 6)
Smith doing his best Bianco impersonation
Matt Smith has a completely new appreciation for what Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco goes through on a day-to-day basis.
The baseball team’s annual end-of-the-fall three-game series lovingly called the “Pizza Bowl” commenced on Wednesday at Oxford-University Stadium with the Red team coming from behind to top the Blue team 3-2. (more…) (October 28, 2010, Page 7)
New faces stand out for Diamond Rebels on first weekend
Getting used to new faces and making adjustments will headline most of Ole Miss’ fall ball season, which began this past week.
“It was a good weekend and a good start,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “There’s a lot of new faces and a lot of the new guys did well.”
Included on Ole Miss’ current 38-man roster are 20 new players.
Of those players, corner infielder/outfielder Preston Overbey may have made the best first impression on Bianco. (September 20, 2010, Page 3B)
Inconsistency hurts Rebels’ chances again
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Sunday’s 20-16 loss against St. John’s concluded what turned out to be a disappointing and poorly timed slide by the Ole Miss Rebels.
Following a 10-game winning streak midway through the Southeastern Conference schedule that included sweeps against LSU and Mississippi State, the Rebels faltered down the stretch and were plagued by inconsistency. (June 7, 2010, Page 1B)
St. John’s bounces Rebels from NCAAs
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — With the season on the line, No. 24 Ole Miss scored 16 runs against St. John’s in the elimination game of the Charlottesville Regional on Sunday.
Normally that would have gotten the job done and kept the Diamond Rebels alive in the NCAA Tournament.
The problem, however, was that not only did Ole Miss starter David Goforth and relief pitcher Trent Rothlin combine to surrender eight runs in the first inning, but the Red Storm was able to respond to Ole Miss’ scores throughout the game en route to a 20-16 victory at Davenport Field.
