Lady Commodores nip Bruce

A fast start and a good display of toughness late in the game proved to be the winning formula for the Lafayette Lady Commodores Tuesday night in the LHS gym.

LHS won its first game of the season with a 57-55 triumph over Bruce, a game that coach Amy Sutton said helped her team find their identity. (November 30, 2011, Page 9)

Sutton pleased with her new lineup so far

Lafayette head coach Amy Sutton got a glimpse of what life will be like without the super senior trio of Nikki McChristian, Brianna Fisher and Shaq Isom this past weekend when the Lady Commodores participated in Hickory Flat’s jamboree.

In defeating Alcorn Central 30-29 and Holly Springs 28-16 in two two-quarter contests, Sutton saw a lot of promise. (November 3, 2011, Page 8)

Versatile Smith took her game to another level

Heading into this season Lafayette volleyball coach Rachel Wenzel was faced with a rather large problem: How could the Lady Commodores replace the production and leadership that left along with the graduated senior class?

She knew it would be no easy task, but senior middle blocker Ashley Smith went to Wenzel and requested that her coach trust her enough to allow her to play all the way around, rather than be substituted in the back row. (more…) (October 26, 2011, Page 1B)

Lady Bruins eliminate LHS from playoffs

MADISON — Rachel Wenzel knew her team had its work cut out for it well before the team bus arrived on the gated campus of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Madison on Tuesday.

Her assumptions were correct.

The Lady Bruins were as good as their 16-match winning streak suggested and they did just enough to eliminate Lafayette from the first round of the Class I playoffs with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) victory. (October 5, 2011, Page 6)

Lafayette splits district games with Lewisburg

There were more signs the Lafayette Commodores were starting to come together as a boys basketball team Friday night in a matchup with Lewisburg in the LHS gym. The Commodores may have lost 48-43 to the visiting Patriots, but instead of falling behind early and eventually losing by double digits, the Commodores showed some grit by rallying from an eight-point deficit in the in the third quarter to pull into the lead late in the fourth quarter. (December 20, 2010, Page 6)
