RIDGELAND — The Oxford Lady Chargers’ run through the Class 5A soccer playoffs came to an abrupt end Tuesday.

Oxford’s girls soccer team earned its first win of the season over the weekend with a 2-1 triumph over Gautier. Oxford (1-5 overall) lost 2-0 to Warren Central and 2-1 to Northwest Rankin in the other two games. The show will go on, just one day later, after Oxford High School theatre postponed the opening of the “Wizard of Oz,” from Thursday to a Friday opening. Oxford’s girls soccer team played two of the best teams in the state over the weekend and fared well in both games. The Lady Chargers lost 2-0 to Ridgeland and tied Gulfport 0-0. Ridgeland is the defending Class 5A champion, while Gulfport won its district last season in Class 6A. Emily Meadows had seven saves in the loss to Ridgeland and then had 11 saves in the tie against Gulfport. Oxford’s defense was led by Maia Cotelo. Allison Lyon, Eden Sandlin and Maggie Mitchell were credited with solid overall play, while Meredith Sanford led the offense. Both Oxford teams will return to action Friday against Lafayette.
The Lady Chargers will play LHS at Ole Miss at 5 p.m., while the Chargers play the Commodores at 7. (December 7, 2010, Page 9)
The Oxford Lady Chargers soccer team earned a 4-0 win over New Albany Tuesday night. Mary Helen Rychlak led the team with two goals scored. Maggie Mitchell added a goal off an assist from Maia Cotelo, while seventh-grader Zoe Scruggs added the final goal. Oxford High School drama students will stage the challenging musical, “Blood Brothers,” as their first play of the 2010-11 school year. The show opens tonight at the OHS auditorium at 7:30 and again Friday and Saturday at the same times. (September 23, 2010, Page 1)
OHS SOCCER — The Oxford Lady Chargers soccer team advanced in the Class 5A playoffs Monday with a historic 3-1 win over Saltillo. Tonight will be the first time the Lady Chargers have hosted a North Half title match and the opponent, Ridgeland, is a familiar foe that defeated OHS in the 2006 North Half title match. The Chargers unfortunately weren’t as lucky as the Lady Chargers as they fell 2-0 to Callaway in the second round of the 5A playoffs Monday. (February 2, 2010, Page 8)
