Chargers open 5A playoffs with familiar opponent
Oxford’s return to the playoffs will be against a familiar foe in Hernando. The best-of-three series begins Friday evening at 6. Fondren’s drive pays off for OHS Chargers
Oxford coach Drew Tyler knows a Most Valuable Player candidate when he sees one. After having 13 consecutive players who have won the EAGLE’s top boys basketball award over the years, Tyler has gained a great perspective as to what an individual has to do to obtain such recognition.
For 6-foot-2 OHS junior guard Justin Fondren, the recipe for success that ultimately allowed him to earn the 2011 EAGLE Player of Year award was his ability to do everything well. Oxford shows maturity in win over NHS
Chris Baughman may be in his first season as Oxford High’s head baseball coach, but he seems to have already mastered the delivery of the between-inning speech.
Baughman’s discussion with his players after the visiting New Hope Trojans scored four runs off OHS starter James Lear in the top of the first inning on Friday was brief and to the point. Rams take down OHS in 5A playoffs
Oxford boy’s basketball coach Drew Tyler pointed out the positives of his Chargers and a season that saw them advance to the Class 5A North Half tournament at Indianola-Gentry. It was hard to be critical of much the Chargers have done the last two weeks of the season even after they lost 61-34 to Jackson’s Provine in the North Half semifinals Friday night. Chargers show great effort in playoff win
The Oxford Chargers haven’t always put forth complete efforts this season. Some nights, their defense was lacking, or they would get beat on the boards because of lackluster effort.
That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, as the Chargers completed Oxford’s sweep of Clarksdale by defeating the Wildcats 63-57 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The win advances the Chargers (17-10 overall) to the 5A North Half tournament Friday at Indianola-Gentry, a feat the team did not accomplish last season. (February 16, 2011, Page 6)
