Chargers fall to West Point on the road

Three runs in the top of the seventh inning wasn’t enough to lift the Oxford Chargers past West Point in a Division 2-5A contest Tuesday evening. (more…) (April 4, 2012, Page 3B)

Lear hits, pitches Oxford past LHS

It seems like a safe bet that Oxford senior James Lear will remember the last two days of March 2012 when he reflects on his high school career in a few years. One night after earning a save in Oxford’s 5-4 win over Saltillo, Lear led the Chargers to a 10-8 win over cross-town rival Lafayette at W.V. Brewer Field on Saturday afternoon. Oxford tames Tigers

Two runs in the second inning were all Oxford needed to sneak past the Saltillo Tigers 2-1 on Tuesday. (more…) (March 28, 2012, Page 7)

Chargers’ fast start not enough to defeat Trojans

NEW HOPE — It was good to be an Oxford Charger or a family member of a Charger midway through Friday night’s Division 2-5A baseball game with New Hope. With the Chargers up 7-3 in the top of the fourth inning following a towering three-run home run by Parker Adamson, everything felt good for the Chargers in the dugout. Oxford unable to adjust in opener

The difference between winning and losing for the Oxford Chargers on Tuesday night in their game with New Hope at Edwin Moak Field boiled down to a few small mistakes made in a very close contest of evenly matched teams. (more…) (March 21, 2012, Page 7)

Surprise appearance may turn into regular occurrence for Gibbs

COLUMN: Saturday evening the following line came across my Twitter feed: “L. Gibbs: W (1-0), 6.1 IP, ER, 2H, 2BB, 5K, 103 pitches.”

A brief text conversation ensued.

“Luke pitches?” I asked.

“He does now!” Oxford coach Chris Baughman replied. (more…) (March 19, 2012, Page 7)

Chargers rally to defeat Wildcats

Oxford concluded its annual Spring Break Tournament at Edwin Moak Field on Thursday with a 3-2 win over Independence that showed the Chargers’ ability to pitch, defend and score runs in an efficient manner.

Even though the Chargers (7-5 overall) fell behind the Wildcats 2-0, there was never any panic, never any despair shown in the dugout that a comeback wasn’t going to be made. (March 16, 2012, Page 6A)

Oxford Chargers run-rule Senatobia

Oxford got off to a fast start Tuesday, run-ruling Senatobia 13-3 in five innings in the day’s third game.

Eight Chargers recorded hits in the game.

Junior third baseman William Elliott led the team with three hits (single, double, triple) and four RBIs. (more…) (March 14, 2012, Page 7)

Chargers stay tough, take Classic

Oxford baseball coach Chris Baughman held a meeting with his team Wednesday about facing adversity and staying mentally tough.

It didn’t take long for the meeting to be put to the test, as the Chargers had to respond to an early deficit in order to defeat Lafayette 6-5 Friday night at Edwin Moak Field in the Crosstown Classic. (more…) (March 12, 2012, Page 3B)

OHS falls at Kossuth

The Oxford Chargers baseball team fell to 3-4 overall on the season after Kossuth earned a 5-2 victory on Tuesday.

Luke Gibbs scored one of the Chargers’ runs on a solo homer.

Oxford returns to action Thursday, hosting Lafayette at 7 p.m.

The game, which can be heard locally on 95.5 FM, was originally scheduled for Friday but was bumped up due to weather concerns. (March 7, 2012, Page 7)
