Led by outstanding individual efforts from Sam Kendricks, Justin Fondren and Kristen Dickerson, the Oxford boys and girls track teams easily won the Division 2-5A meet at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field on Saturday.

Oxford teams capture EAGLE titles

Rain over the weekend could only postpone, not prevent, the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers from winning the 10th annual EAGLE Invitational on Monday at Bobby Holcomb Field.

While the meet was scheduled for Saturday and pushed back two days, the delay didn’t matter as the Chargers totaled 229 points to capture the title, while the Lady Chargers finished with 143.5 points. (more…) (March 29, 2011, Page 8)

Kendricks has high expectations for squad

Saturday’s weather forecast of sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 60s was a pleasing one for Scott Kendricks. The long-time Oxford High track coach has been waiting for the weather to clear and get warmer so that his team, and the defending Class 5A state champion Lady Chargers coached by Jamie Perkins, can get out and show what they can do. Pearl tops Oxford in 5A North Half match

An early lead and another valiant effort wasn’t enough to lift the Oxford Chargers past the Pearl Pirates in the Class 5A North Half title match Thursday at Pearl. Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Lucian Duchaine, the seven-time state champion Pirates found a way to rally in the second half to post a 3-1 win and advance to Saturday’s 5A state title match.

OHS coach Jamie Perkins said he was proud of the way his team competed less than a week after defeating Callaway in a marathon match that was finally decided on penalty kicks. (February 4, 2011, Page 6A)

Chargers rally to defeat Callaway in playoff marathon

A season of close losses finally turned in favor of the Oxford Chargers at just the right time Saturday against Callaway in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The Chargers advanced to Tuesday’s 5A North Half title match against Pearl by defeating Callaway 3-2 in  penalty kicks. Oxford (13-4-1 overall) gained a huge measure of revenge with the win over Callaway, the only team to beat OHS last season, by playing as a team and learning from some of the tight games it had been involved in during the season. (January 31, 2011, Page 6)

Oxford runs over Saltillo in 5A playoffs

Oxford forward Shea Mnichowski had an idea of how many goals he wanted to score heading into Thursday night’s Class 5A playoff game with Saltillo at Bobby Holcomb Field.

Mnichowski said he told Chargers coach Jamie Perkins that if he scored four goals, he wanted to score five before being lifted from the game in order to play a younger member of the team. (more…) (January 28, 2011, Page 6A)

Murphy shines in Lady Chargers’ win

No one must have told Oxford goalkeeper Megan Murphy that tonight’s game against Lake Cormorant was scheduled to be Senior Night.

On Wednesday, the senior keeper’s exceptional play lifted the Lady Chargers to a narrow 1-0 victory over Hernando to claim the District 1-5A championship.

In the nightcap, the Oxford boys were able to survive a late barrage to win 2-1.

Murphy had a pretty easy night until the final minutes of the game when she showed her experience time and time again to preserve the win, making an array of saves from point-blank range. (January 20, 2011, Page 6)

Oxford takes two games from Lafayette

Fresh off of an uncharacteristic three-game losing streak, the Oxford boys soccer team took out its frustrations on crosstown rival Lafayette on a frigid Friday night cruising past the Commodores 8-0 at William L. Buford Stadium. Earlier in the evening, the Lady Chargers scored in the opening minutes of their game against Lafayette and held on for a 1-0 victory at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.

Having lost three games prior to Friday’s big win, Oxford boys coach Jamie Perkins said he didn’t change anything strategically with the team. He just had a heart-to-heart talk with his players. (December 13, 2010, Page 1B)

Oxford teams finish third at state meet

A strong finish to the season in the Class 5A state meet helped lift the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers to third-place finishes Saturday at MHSAA Cross Country Championships held at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails.

Five overall athletes earned All-State recognition for Oxford, including Callie Mayo, Emily Hankins and Audrey Dayan for the Lady Chargers and Lucian Duchaine and Fisher Austin for the Chargers. (November 8, 2010, Page 3B)

Oxford teams perform well

The Lady Chargers were third out of 13 teams in the event, finishing behind Tupelo at Arlington, Tenn. (September 15, 2010, Page 8)
