Chargers capture 5A North Half title

Oxford advanced to a sixth straight state championship in tennis by defeating Starkville 6-1 Friday afternoon. Rain forced the match to be played indoors at the Gillom Sports Center. Oxford tops Stone to win fifth state title

CLINTON — For anybody who may have ever wondered if Oxford tennis coach Louis Nash could fly the answer is yes. Moments after the Oxford Chargers wrapped up their fifth straight MHSAA tennis championship at Brighton Park, Nash leapt into the air and straight into the arms of senior mixed doubles player Judson Watson, who joined with teammate Cari Hansen to defeat Stone County’s Josh Johnson and Beth Owen 3-6, 6-4 (10-5) in the deciding match of the day. (May 10, 2012, Page 6)

Swindoll, Elliott top teammates for title

RIDGELAND — It seemed to be hard for members of the Oxford High tennis team to pick a boys doubles team to root for in Tuesday’s Class 5A individual tennis championship. Chargers pound Titans to win 5A North title

Chargers poised to make final push

As the weather heats up in the area, so is the Oxford High tennis team. The Chargers are now just one win away from returning to the Metro Jackson area to play in the MHSAA Class 5A state title match. Chargers clip Commodores on the court

Avent’s Park was surrounded by spectators Thursday afternoon as Lafayette and Oxford closed out their regular seasons with the annual tennis meeting between the two schools.

With both squads already a part of the Class 4A (LHS) and 5A (OHS) playoffs, Thursday’s match was about different things for each coach.
The Chargers defeated the Commodores 5-2 but the two wins were a marked improvement for Debbie Swindoll’s Commodores, who lost 7-0 to OHS last year.

Apart from the two wins, the No. 1 boys doubles match had to be decided with a tiebreaker, while two other doubles matches were also competitive. (April 13, 2012, Page 7A)

Chargers completely dominate Tupelo in tennis
