In a surprise move, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors voted Monday at an informational public hearing to move forward with negotiations with officials from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi on the medical center’s plans to build a new $300 million facility in Oxford.
After an hour-plus presentation by Dick Cowart, legal counsel for Baptist, and a round of questions from the standing-room-only audience, Supervisor Mike Pickens made a motion to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the hospital to allow the hospital corporation to buy out of the original lease it had with the city of Oxford and Lafayette County for about $60 million.
