Oxford’s Billups wins top award in 5A
Oxford’s success on the football field this season was translated on the Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 5A All-State team that was recently released.
Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was named Player of the Year after throwing for 2,915 yards and 33 touchdowns for the 9-4 Chargers. Billups ranked second in the entire state in both passing yards and touchdowns thrown.
Joining Billups on the first team offense for the MAC team were senior wide receiver DeShaun McNeal and senior tight end Larry Pettis. Senior offensive lineman Terry Johnson was also named to the second team on offense. Johnson will be playing in Saturday’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Classic in Mobile, Ala. Wave crash Oxford’s 5A playoff hopes
One of the most successful seasons on the gridiron the past few seasons for the Oxford Chargers ended with a disappointing 27-12 loss to the West Point Green Wave in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field.
A good, physical gameplan helped lifted the Green Wave (11-1 overall) into the 5A North Half title game. (November 22, 2010, Page 6B)
Versatile Conard developing as WVHS leader
Chris Conard has all the attributes of a star football player. He easily passes the eye test and looks good on paper. He has the skill set that not only makes him stand out, but has allowed the current junior to play on Water Valley’s varsity squad since he was in eighth grade.
Last Friday, Conard had a career-game in Water Valley’s 20-10 win in the season finale at Mooreville, grabbing three interceptions while also making nine tackles and breaking up five passes.
It’s because of that stellar performance that Conard was named the EAGLE’s Final Player of the Week for the 2010 season. (November 2, 2010, Page 9)
Chargers explode on offense, Rams
As a program in the midst of rebuilding, the Indianola-Gentry Rams never really stood a chance on Friday against an Oxford Chargers squad that has hit its stride.

OHS bounces back to trounce Wildcats
The Oxford Chargers got the bad taste of losing to New Hope out of their mouths Friday night with a 37-13 win over Clarksdale at Bobby Holcomb Field. The win improved the Chargers to 4-2 overall and an even more important 1-1 in Region 1-5A.
OHS coach Johnny Hill felt his Chargers played “pretty well” against the Wildcats (3-3, 1-1). (October 4, 2010, Page 4B)
Oxford’s Ivy wins top player honor
Junior Stan Ivy came up big for Oxford in its first road test of the season last Friday.
Facing a tough Senatobia team, Ivy not only caught two touchdown passes of 20 and 40 yards, but he also returned the opening kickoff of the second half 86 yards for his third touchdown of the game.
The emergence of Ivy as a game changer — he finished the game with 186 all-purpose yards — has been more than a welcomed development for senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups.
Prior to the season, Billups said that Ivy would be a good complement to an offense that already had tall targets in DeShaun McNeal and Larry Pettis.

Ivy paces Chargers win over Senatobia
A sluggish start on offense for the Oxford Chargers on Friday night was rectified by the speed of wide receiver Stan Ivy. Just a day after watching his son, Stantavias Ivy Jr., come into the world, Ivy played a big part in the Chargers’ 35-7 win over Senatobia.
Ivy scored three straight touchdowns in the game for Oxford, including two in an 11.8 second time span, that increased a 7-0 lead to 21-0 heading into halftime for the Chargers (3-1 overall). (September 13, 2010, Page 4B)
‘Dores outlast Chargers in Crosstown Classic
The annual matchup between Lafayette and Oxford is called the Crosstown Classic for a reason and the latest installment in the series played Friday night at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field definitely lived up to the moniker.
In a game that is usually decided by just one play, it was Lafayette junior defensive end Keeyon Tyson that produced the single-biggest play in a 21-14 win for the No. 1 Commodores. Just a little over a minute after the Commodores (3-0 overall) scored the game-winning touchdown on a 12-yard run by Demarkus Dennis at the 2:13 mark of the fourth quarter, Tyson was able to thwart a potential game-tying scoring drive for the Chargers (2-1) by slapping the ball away from quarterback Guy Cameron Billups at the LHS 13-yard line.
