COLUMN: JACKSON — Oxford’s latest girls basketball title, captured Saturday with a 62-54 win over South Jones at the Mississippi Coliseum, was all about family.
JACKSON — Defensive adjustments have been a big key to success for the Oxford Lady Chargers this season on the basketball court. Tuesday afternoon, in the team’s biggest game of the season, it was a defensive adjustment made at halftime that ended up advancing the Lady Chargers to the MHSAA’s Class 5A state championship game on Saturday. Oxford’s Lady Chargers may be considered the favorite team to win the MHSAA’s Class 5A state title this year but coach Shayne Linzy knows there is still a lot for his team to accomplish before they can garner the coveted gold ball given to the champion. (February 24, 2012, Page 6A)
A season that was started with great promise and expectations continued to deliver on all accounts for the Oxford Lady Chargers and their fans Saturday night in the OHS gym. A night after defeating Canton 63-49 to advance to Jackson for the MHSAA state tournament for the first time since 2005, the Lady Chargers defeated Center Hill 51-48 to win the 5A North Half title.

Erika Sisk couldn’t wait to hit the court Monday night against Callaway. Oxford’s senior point guard said she woke up at 4:30 in the morning in anticipation of the MHSAA Class 5A playoff matchup in the OHS gym.
Sisk, along with her teammates, showed no signs of fatigue as the Lady Chargers easily defeated Callaway 79-63 to advance to this weekend’s North Half tournament that will be played in the OHS gym. (February 14, 2012, Page 8)
One of the Oxford Lady Chargers’ preseason goals was to capture the Division 2-5A Tournament title. Despite a second straight regular season title and a perfect overall record to be proud of, the victory the Lady Chargers wanted most came Friday with an 83-52 triumph over West Point in the 2-5A title game. The Oxford gym provided a rocking atmosphere Friday for Senior Night.
Another great team effort produced a 71-32 win over Grenada for the Oxford Lady Chargers Tuesday night. Erika Sisk led the way with 16 points and eight steals, while Kristen Dickerson and Alexus Malone scored 15 and 10 points respectively. Oxford improved to 25-0 with the win. The Lady Chargers’ junior varsity team also produced a win. Bre Pettis scored 13 points in the 33-13 win. The JV girls finished the year 7-1 overall. Both Oxford varsity teams finish out the regular season Friday night at home against Coldwater. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (February 2, 2012, Page 8)
