Ace effort from Defer lifts Blue Devils

WATER VALLEY — Skyler Defer had a feeling he was going to pitch well and help lead the Water Valley Blue Devils to a win over Senatobia Monday night when he was warming up in the bullpen.

What Defer may not have realized was just how well he would pitch; despite feeling as good as he did on the mound early, he would become the first on the pitching staff to record a complete-game effort this season. (March 12, 2013, Page 8)

Bishop, Taylor lead ‘Dores past Devils

After winning in extra innings against cross-town rival Oxford on Friday night, Lafayette coach Patrick Robey was a little worried about how his team would respond when it hosted Water Valley on Saturday afternoon.

That worry was put to rest though as the Commodores knocked off the Blue Devils 8-1 at W.V. Brewer Field.

Devils hoping Stough can be a weapon

WATER VALLEY — The new wave of Blue Devils is already here.

Kossuth dusts Devils to advance

KOSSUTH—Water Valley’s second trip up to face the Aggies on their home field didn’t turn out nearly as well as the trip Thursday night. Just two days after blanking Kossuth 3-0 in the first game of the MHSAA’s Class 3A second round series, the Blue Devils were packing up their baseball gear until summer ball starts in June.

Kossuth rallied to take the final two games of the series with the Blue Devils thanks a 14-2 win at WVHS on Friday night and a 12-5 win at KHS on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils (17-13 overall) fell behind 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning Saturday on a grand slam from David Gibson and never got any closer than three runs. Kossuth, who now faces South Pontotoc in the quarterfinals, then put the game on ice with five runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth.

WVHS coach Kary Bridges praised the Aggies (19-6) before the start of the series and remained complementary after the series was over. (April 30, 2012, Page 9)

Greer drives Devils to win over Aggies

KOSSUTH — Water Valley coach Kary Bridges said Kossuth pitcher Tyler Nelms was the best arm his team had faced all year after Thursday night’s game in Kossuth. Fortunately, for Bridges, the Blue Devils also had a pretty good one going on the hill for them as well. (April 27, 2012, Page 6A)

Red-hot Blue Devils set to face Kossuth

Water Valley baseball coach Kary Bridges likes where his team is heading into the next round of the MHSAA’s Class 3A playoffs. His Blue Devils (16-11 overall) are hot having won 12 of their last 13 games which included a sweep of Winona most recently. (April 25, 2012, Page 7)

Big innings lead WVHS past Tigers

WINONA — Water Valley coach Kary Bridges wanted his team to “add on” heading into the final inning against Winona on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils were a little more advanced in their mathematics though, as they first added and then multiplied. (more…) (April 23, 2012, Page 4B)

Miscues cost Devils in 2-3A finale

WATER VALLEY — A few small mistakes and a couple of decisions coach Kary Bridges wished he could have back ended up deciding Monday night’s regular season finale for the Water Valley Blue Devils. Water Valley entered the Division 2-3A matchup with South Pontotoc at Blue Devil field winners of 10 straight.

That stat is now winners in 10 of the last 11 games after South Pontotoc edged the Blue Devils 5-3.

Monday’s setback cost the Blue Devils (14-11 overall) the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Class 3A playoffs. WVHS will now play Winona in the first round, and since higher seeds decide how the best-of-three series is set up, the Blue Devils will likely have to defeat the Tigers at their home park Saturday in order to advance. (April 17, 2012, Page 6)
