Hernando capitalizes on OHS miscues, sweeps series

A game filled with mistakes was almost erased by the Oxford Chargers’ best offensive inning of their MHSAA Class 5A quarterfinal series with Hernando Saturday night at Edwin Moak Field. Trailing by seven runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Chargers scored four runs with two outs to get within three of the Tigers. (more…) (May 7, 2012, Page 9)

Chargers explode on Titans in series opener

RIDGELAND — Oxford’s most explosive offensive inning of the season couldn’t have come at a better time. Down 4-2 to Ridgeland, the defending Class 5A champions, at Titan Field, the Chargers rallied by scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead, their first of the game.
Oxford went on to hold a shocked group of Titans in place the rest of the way and earn an 11-5 win in the first game of a best-of-three 5A playoff series that continues tonight at Oxford’s Edwin Moak Field at 6. (April 27, 2012, Page 6A)

Lear’s home run lifts Chargers past Trojans

Tuesday night’s game against New Hope felt awfully familiar for Oxford senior James Lear. Just nine days after lifting the Chargers to a dramatic win over Lafayette through the power of a two-run home run, Lear propelled the Chargers to a 4-2 victory over the Trojans with another two-run blast. (April 11, 2012, Page 8)

OHS earns division win over West Point

Oxford sophomore pitcher Hunter Roth didn’t realize just how important Friday night’s 5-1 win over West Point really was until after the game.

Sure, Roth knew it improved the Chargers’ record within Division 2-5A play, but the significance didn’t really hit him, or the other members of the team, until after OHS coach Chris Baughman got through talking with them. (April 9, 2012, Page 8)

Lear hits, pitches Oxford past LHS

It seems like a safe bet that Oxford senior James Lear will remember the last two days of March 2012 when he reflects on his high school career in a few years. One night after earning a save in Oxford’s 5-4 win over Saltillo, Lear led the Chargers to a 10-8 win over cross-town rival Lafayette at W.V. Brewer Field on Saturday afternoon. Eagles outlast Oxford in tourney opener

Oxford’s first game of its annual Spring Break Tournament at Edwin Moak field came down to a couple swings of the bat Monday. Unfortunately for the Chargers, it was Jackson (Tenn.) Christian that ended up getting the best swings as the Eagles topped OHS 5-3.

Jackson Christian’s Matt Poteete hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to break the 3-3 tie and catapult the Eagles to a win in the tournament that continues through Thursday.

Potette’s home run was one of three in the game for the Eagles, who also had success in going deep in the game leading up to their meeting with the Chargers. Brad Sills, Jackson’s designated hitter and No. 7 hitter in the lineup, also had two solo home runs in the contest. His first came in the fourth inning and put the first run on the scoreboard, while his solo shot in the sixth gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead. (March 13, 2012, Page 6)

Baughman: OHS should be fine with new bats

The way Oxford head coach Chris Baughman looks at it, this may have been the perfect year for high school teams to implement the new BBCOR bats that college players swung last year.

The bats high schools used last year allowed for more pop when ball met bat. (more…) (February 23, 2012, Page 7)

Chargers learn from sweep of Amory

As Chris Baughman found out Monday, there’s nothing wrong with learning a thing or two on your birthday.

Due to poor weather over the weekend, a pair of four-inning jamboree games was rescheduled for Baughman’s birthday at Edwin Moak Field and the Chargers made the doubleheader a learning experience. (more…) (February 21, 2012, Page 8)
