Blue Devils preparing for Trojan invasion

Last week’s victory at Calhoun City was a big one for the Water Valley Blue Devils as they ended a brief skid against the Wildcats.

Things won’t get any easier Friday when the Blue Devils (3-0 overall) host another regional rival in the Bruce Trojans (3-0).

In their first three games of the season against Kennedy, Vardaman and Coffeeville, the Trojans have flexed their muscles by out-scoring their opponents 136-20. (September 6, 2012, Page 9)

Blue Devils grow in win over CCHS

CALHOUN CITY — The Water Valley Blue Devils grew considerably as a team in their latest game with the Calhoun City Wildcats on Friday night. Instead of losing another heartbreaker to CCHS like Water Valley has the past two years, the Blue Devils defeated the Wildcats 38-21 on the road. The victory not only improved WVHS to 3-0 on the year, but it showed the rest of Class 3A — and head coach Brad Embry — that the program has taken another step toward building a championship team and program. (September 3, 2012, Page 3B)

Railroad Trophy remains stationed in Water Valley

COFFEEVILLE — The Water Valley Blue Devils left little doubt who was the better squad in the Railroad Trophy Rivalry Game Friday at Coffeeville.

The visitors in blue and white found the end zone three unanswered times to open the 49-13 victory and never allowed the Pirates to get within 14 points. (August 27, 2012, Page 1B)

Embry pleased with Devils’ progress

WATER VALLEY — Brad Embry and his football staff gave their DVD player in the Water Valley fieldhouse a workout this spring. In an effort to find out who could help the Blue Devils in 2012, Embry evaluated film on almost 80 players following the end of spring drills on May 10. The end result of the evaluation was positive moving forward, Embry said, and several newcomers impressed. (May 23, 2012, Page 7A)

Liggins’ leadership, dedication paced LHS in 2011

There were a lot reasons why the Lafayette Commodores finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in the state and with a second straight MHSAA Class 4A state title trophy to put on display. A bevy of talented players and a very organized coaching staff are at the top of the list of reasons why the Commodores reeled off another 16-0 season, but leadership provided by key players was also a major reason for the immense success.
