Chargers look to reload, keep playoff streak alive

A veteran team, as far as varsity minutes go, is not what Oxford High boys basketball coach Drew Tyler has to work with this upcoming season. That doesn’t mean his Chargers can’t qualify for a 15th straight postseason appearance because what this team lacks in experience, they make up with hustle, desire and basketball IQ. (November 2, 2012, Page 7A)

Hill pleased with where Chargers are after spring

Oxford head football coach Johnny Hill has been around long enough to know when a team performs at a high level in the spring and when it doesn’t. So when Hill says his Chargers accomplished a lot during the offseason drills set up annually for high school teams, it means something. (May 25, 2012, Page 7A)

Oxford sweeps Okolona

Playing in a tournament hosted at Tupelo Monday, the Oxford boys and girls basketball teams swept Okolona. The Lady Chargers improved to 2-0 with a 95-10 win. Erika Sisk led the Lady Chargers with 20 points, while Alexus Malone scored 15 and Kristen Dickerson scored 11. (more…) (November 8, 2011, Page 10)

Chargers have it all in 2011-12

Size, speed and experience are expected to make the Oxford Chargers a formidable foe this year on the basketball court. OHS coach Drew Tyler returns four starters, six seniors and five juniors from a team that advanced to the Class 5A North Half tournament last season.

He also has added much needed size to his roster in the form of transfer Will O’Keefe and welcomes 6-foot-5 Romeo Johnson back into the fold after he had to miss the second half of last season. (November 3, 2011, Page 10)

Chargers show great effort in playoff win

The Oxford Chargers haven’t always put forth complete efforts this season. Some nights, their defense was lacking, or they would get beat on the boards because of lackluster effort.

That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, as the Chargers completed Oxford’s sweep of Clarksdale by defeating the Wildcats 63-57 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The win advances the Chargers (17-10 overall) to the 5A North Half tournament Friday at Indianola-Gentry, a feat the team did not accomplish last season. (February 16, 2011, Page 6)

Oxford sweeps Coldwater

A balanced scoring ledger for both the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers basketball squads ended up leading to home wins over Coldwater Thursday night. Oxford’s boys defeated Coldwater 83-55 to improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Lady Chargers played another great team game in a 68-63 win. (November 19, 2010, Page 7A)
