Justin Fondren

Fondren, Super, McGhee pace Chargers to fourth

PEARL — Three first-place finishes, highlighted by the final high jump of Justin Fondren’s prep career in Mississippi, paced the Oxford Chargers in Friday’s MHSAA Class 5A state meet held at Pearl High School.

Oxford scored 30 of its 51 points thanks to Fondren’s leap of 7 feet, Michael McGhee’s throw of 45 feet, 10 inches in the shot put and Austin Super’s mark of 14-3 in the pole vault. The Chargers finished fourth overall in the meet that was won by Pearl with 73 points.

Fondren finished first in the high jump and then attempted 7.25 to tie the overall state meet record of Marcus Jackson from J.Z. George but was unable to clear the bar during his three attempts. Fondren has cleared the height before but an athlete has to do it at the state meet in order for it to be a state record. (May 14, 2012, Page 2B)

Oxford could win several individual state titles

Oxford may not really be in contention to win a team state title this year at the MHSAA Class 5A state meet, but three or four Chargers are heavy favorites to win individual state championships.

Led by the nation’s best high jumper, Justin Fondren, the Chargers should still finish in the top five even if they don’t end up winning a state title this year. (May 11, 2012, Page 8A)

Lady Chargers win Region 1-5A title

Dominant is what the Oxford Lady Chargers were Saturday in the Region 1-5A meet held at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field. Oxford finished first in the meet with 212 points, almost 100 more than second-place finisher Center Hill (117). The Lady Chargers also finished with seven first-place finishes and a bevy of seconds to earn the title. First-place finishes garner 10 points, while second-place finishes garner eight. Oxford teams roll to division titles

Rainy conditions at Bobby Holcomb Field on Tuesday were only able to slow, not stop, the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers in the annual Division 2-5A meet. Both teams won the respective team titles despite the weather that slowed the track for running events. (more…) (April 18, 2012, Page 8)

Late run lifts Callaway past Oxford

JACKSON — A series of runs decided Tuesday night’s elimination game of the Class 5A North Half state tournament between the Oxford Chargers and Callaway in the CHS gym.

Unfortunately for Oxford, the last run of the night was produced by Callaway and standout guard Malik Newman, who scored 31 points in a 65-59 win that sent Callaway on to play Canton on Friday. (more…) (February 15, 2012, Page 6)

Different styles produce wins for OHS

Both Oxford High basketball squads secured a spot in the MHSAA Class 5A Playoffs next week and a spot in the Division 2-5A championship games with wins over Saltillo at the OHS gym Tuesday night.
The similarities to the two teams’ victories stop there though, as the Lady Chargers cruised to an 83-35 win and the Chargers had to fight off a late run by the Tigers to win 62-55. (February 8, 2012, Page 6)
