The benefits of holiday tournaments and a regular stream of games continued to show for the Lafayette Commodores Friday and Saturday in the annual “O” Town Showdown. Lafayette improved to 2-3 in games played in the Oxford High gym this year by earning two wins in the annual tourney.
LHS defeated Byhalia 49-37 Friday to even its record at 4-4 and then beat Ashland 56-47 Saturday evening to improve to three games over last year’s win total of two. (December 31, 2012, Page 7)
An 0-3 week, after starting the year with two wins, wasn’t the goal of the Lafayette Commodores. But when the team’s best player in Brandon Mack isn’t available to help out against the biggest rival and two teams from Alabama, earning wins for the Commodores was a tough assignment.
Lafayette dropped both of its games in the inaugural Mississippi-Alabama Challenge played Friday and Saturday in the Oxford High gym. Oxford’s reversal of fortune on the gridiron this season was a result of many different players. For a team that was 5-6 and not in the playoffs in 2011, an 11-2 overall record and a trip to the semifinals of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs in 2012 took a lot of hard work on the part of several top players. It was hard to tell that the Lafayette Commodores hadn’t been in the gym but for three weeks as a team during Saturday night’s game with Grenada. Lafayette led the Chargers from start to finish in its contest in the annual Coach “C” Shootout by playing tough defense, rebounding and shooting high-percentage shots.
The end result was a 60-44 win for the Commodores, who are now 2-0 for the first time in several seasons. (December 10, 2012, Page 4B)
Lafayette will look to build on the success it garnered in the season opener against Bruce Saturday evening in the annual Coach “C” Shootout. The one-day event will be held in the LHS gym and the Commodores will play host to the Grenada Chargers at approximately 7:30.
