Ole Miss freshmen adapting to college life

Six key pieces of the future of Ole Miss’ baseball program didn’t just stroll into the athletics department on Thursday like typical freshmen.

Instead, pitchers Hawtin Buchanan, Josh Laxer and Chris Ellis, catcher/first baseman Sikes Orvis, outfielder Auston Bousfield and outfielder/left-handed pitcher Chase Reeves entered the meeting room sounding more like old men, discussing how sore they were from the advanced workout regiment they’d been put through during summer school, nodding in agreement to one another’s assessments.

It’s all part of the process of becoming a Division 1 athlete, and all six have accepted that. (August 1, 2011, Page 8A)

Rebels will have to wait on Jamison

Incoming freshmen pitchers Hawtin Buchanan and Josh Laxer appear to be big Ole Miss leans that will be in Oxford well before the Aug. 15 signing deadline.

The same can’t exactly be said for speedy Evangelical Christian (Tenn.) outfielder Will Jamison, who was selected in the 45th round by the Cleveland Indians. (more…) (June 10, 2011, Page 9A)

Day 2 of MLB Draft picks on Rebs

Tuesday was anything but quiet for the Ole Miss baseball team.

After evading the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft’s first 60 picks on Day 1, the Rebels weren’t so lucky on Tuesday as 12 current or future Rebels were selected during the next 28 rounds. (June 8, 2011, Page 6A)

Next three days are big for Ole Miss Rebels

When the media met with Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco two weeks ago he didn’t hide how important the next three days would be for the Diamond Rebels moving forward.
With Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Entry Draft kicking off tonight at 5, the next three days will go a long way in shaping the future of the Rebels. (June 6, 2011, Page 6)

Prep standout takes offer he can’t refuse

While Ole Miss’ Gridiron Rebels were busy making headlines last week with their strong in-state signing class, the Diamond Rebels quietly added a verbal commitment from Madison Central left-handed pitcher Zach Irwin.

Although Irwin’s step parents are Mississippi State supporters, the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder said Ole Miss recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and as a result, he decided to give his verbal commitment to the Rebels last Friday.

Because baseball teams are allotted just 11.7 scholarships to distribute amongst 27 players on a 35-man roster — each of the 27 scholarship players must have at least .25 percent of a scholarship — the amount in which a recruit is offered is a big deal, unlike in sports like football and basketball where student athletes are awarded full scholarships. (February 8, 2011, Page 1B)
