Oxford avoids letdown, tops Senatobia by 20
BLOG: SENATOBIA— Coming off of a big win last week, some Chargers were worried Friday night’s game at Senatobia could end up being a “trap game” for Oxford.
That wasn’t the case, however, as the visiting Chargers jumped out to a 17-point lead and held on to defeat the Warriors 34-14.

Chargers have moved past Classic, focused on Warriors
Last Thursday’s win was a big one for Oxford, but the Chargers have already moved past their first Crosstown Classic victory in seven seasons.

Oxford D pummels LHS in Crosstown Classic
Six years of frustration over losing to Lafayette was erased in one night for the Oxford Chargers thanks to an inspired and near flawless defensive performance. The Chargers defeated the fifth-ranked Commodores 19-0 in front of a jubilant home crowd at Bobby Holcomb Field and regional television audience watching live on Fox Sports South on Thursday night by pounding the Commodores into submission at the point of attack. DE Pegues making plays up front
Contact — a lot of contact — is the aspect of football Oxford senior defensive end Xavier Pegues likes the most. As successful as he has been and could be as a tight end for the Chargers, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Pegues likes to square up with opposing tight ends, offensive tackles and guards in the effort to crunch up running backs and quarterbacks as many times as he can.
It’s really not surprising to find that out considering he is the younger brother of Oxford running back Mont Dean, who cut through defenses like a hot knife going through butter the past few years. So far Pegues — who is instructed by OHS defensive line coach Matt Conner to put a hat on a hat and cause trouble — has dominated on the field. He currently ranks fifth in the nation in tackles (30) according to MaxPreps.com and has a sack to go along with a number of quarterback pressures. And that’s in just two games. Annual Crosstown Classic still on as planned
Tonight’s annual Crosstown Classic football game between the fifth-ranked Lafayette Commodores and the Oxford Chargers at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field remained a go as of this morning. Hill: LHS has plenty of speed yet again
There may be different names running the Lafayette High offense this season but Oxford coach Johnny Hill said quarterback Brandon Mack and running back D.K. Buford have more than enough speed and talent to make all the plays to beat his Chargers if OHS don’t play well.
Oxford hosts No. 6 ranked Lafayette in the annual Crosstown Classic contest Thursday night at 7. In a game that is being sponsored by C Spire Wireless and highlighted on Fox Sports South, Hill is hoping that the only fireworks that go off are before the game and turned in by his team rather than by the speed of Buford and Mack. Isaac could impact Crosstown Classic
The annual Crosstown Classic meeting between Lafayette and Oxford at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field is still on for Thursday according to OHS Athletics Director Johnny Hill. While bad weather associated with Tropical Storm Isaac could still impact the contest, which is scheduled to be broadcast live by Fox Sports South and sponsored by C Spire Wireless as part of the Bright Lights: Football series, Hill said after talking with TV officials this morning that the plan was still to play the game if possible. Oxford makes timely plays to top Tigers
Big plays turned in on offense and defense made the difference again for the Oxford Chargers on Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. A week after defeating Class 6A Grenada at home, the Chargers topped Charleston 21-18 to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Oxford never trailed in the contest as it jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Charleston, which won last year’s MHSAA Class 3A state title and 15 consecutive games prior to Friday’s setback, made things interesting in the second half before Oxford’s offense, defense and special teams rose up to secure the victory. Competitive games on tap for Week 2
Week 2 doesn’t get any easier for the area’s football teams tonight.

Chargers host speedy CHS Tigers Friday
Oxford head football coach Johnny Hill hasn’t taught in a classroom in a few years but he’s still good about giving out grades when they have been earned. The Chargers’ first test of the year came last Friday night at home against Grenada and Hill said he gave his team a B-plus for execution and an A-plus for effort after watching the 28-22 victory in film study.
