On Sunday, Oxford’s record-setting quarterback received that perfect offer and a day later he gave his verbal commitment to John Raegan, Rice University’s run-game coordinator, during an in-home visit to the Billups household in Oxford. (January 25, 2011, Page 9)
One of the most successful seasons on the gridiron the past few seasons for the Oxford Chargers ended with a disappointing 27-12 loss to the West Point Green Wave in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field.
A good, physical gameplan helped lifted the Green Wave (11-1 overall) into the 5A North Half title game. (November 22, 2010, Page 6B)
Cool, calm and collected. That’s what Oxford senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups has been this season on the gridiron for the Chargers.
At a program where good passing quarterbacks have been plentiful over the years, Billups has taken aim at all of the school records and not only been able to duplicate the success of a Matt Malouf or Chad Hill or Mike Stark, but surpass all of them in terms of stats. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)
Just moments after the Oxford lost to West Point 22-20 during the regular season, Chargers coach Johnny Hill told his team that he thought they would see the Green Wave again in the playoffs and at home no less.
His prediction ultimately came true as the Chargers (9-3 overall) host the Green Wave (11-1) in an important second round Class 5A playoff game at Bobby Holcomb Field Friday night. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)
Yesterday’s impromptu speech from Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt was definitely one to remember. (more…) (November 16, 2010)
With focus on stopping an option attack that hurt them a year ago, and an Oxford offense that was able to do virtually whatever it wanted, the Chargers achieved their revenge by up-ending the Pearl Pirates 49-14 at Ray Rogers Stadium. (November 15, 2010, Page 4B)
Both the Oxford Chargers and the Water Valley Blue Devils will hit the road tonight in search of wins that will extend their respective seasons.
For Oxford, the Chargers will travel to face the Pearl Pirates on the road for the second consecutive postseason, while the Blue Devils will head to Ruleville Central for a second-round matchup against the Region 3-3A’s No. 4 seed. (November 12, 2010, Page 6A)
It doesn’t matter that the last time the Oxford Chargers and Pearl Pirates faced one another was a year ago. The Chargers’ 28-14 loss is still fresh in their minds and head coach Johnny Hill has made sure that his team learns from the past.
Sure, then-junior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups had suffered a broken finger on his throwing hand the week prior and as such his throwing ability was inhibited by a cast.
But that’s not what stood out most to Hill when recalling last year’s first-round loss. (November 11, 2010, Page 6)
The first really cold night of the 2010 football season had no impact on the Oxford Chargers’ passing game Friday night. Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was near flawless throwing the ball as he helped lead the Chargers to a 40-21 win over Saltillo in the regular season finale.
For the Chargers, who will try to build on their 8-3 overall record on the road at Pearl in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, Friday’s win was another example of just how complex and in sync the offense under Billups has become. (November 8, 2010, Page 3B)
For the Water Valley Blue Devils and Lafayette Commodores, the time to be clicking on all cylinders is now, as both teams begin their respective runs at Class 3A and Class 4A state titles.
The Oxford Chargers will also hit the gridiron tonight, concluding their regular season with a road game at Saltillo. (November 5, 2010, Page 6A)
