Chargers get playoff rematch against West Point

There will be a sense of deja vu for the Oxford High football team Friday. If it feels like the Chargers have been in West Point playing the Green Wave before this season, it’s because they have. This time, the stakes are a bit higher in their second round matchup of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs as the winner advances to the North Half title game next week. (November 20, 2014, Page 6A)

OHS Chargers score early, often in 62-14 playoff win over Ridgeland

It may have been below freezing outside, but Oxford’s offense was red hot Friday night in its 62-14 victory over the Ridgeland Titans in its opening-round game of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs at Bobby Holcomb Field. (November 16, 2014, Page 1B, 3B)

Oxford could do, and did, whatever it wanted to Friday night and there was nothing Ridgeland could do about it. The Chargers (11-1) defeated the Titans (5-7) 62-14 in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 5A state playoffs at Bobby Holcomb Field. (more…) (November 14, 2014)

OHS, LHS look to stay alive in playoffs

The postseason is in full swing as two area prep football teams are in playoff mode. Oxford begins its Class 5A playoff run tonight against visiting Ridgeland while Lafayette looks to keep its going when the Commodores host Cleveland in a Class 4A second-round matchup. (November 14, 2014, Page 6A)

Chargers begin playoffs against Ridgeland

After falling short in the state title game, the Oxford Chargers have been itching to make a return trip this season. Their first hurdle to clear on the road to Starkville comes in the form of the visiting Ridgeland Titans in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs Friday night. (November 13, 2014, Page 6A)

Chargers score early, often in coach-pleasing victory

LAKE CORMORANT — After Friday’s OHS-Lake Cormorant game was over, Oxford coach Johnny Hill huddled his team up at midfield and told it one thing. They “played like Chargers.” That comment is relevant because to Hill, his team had not looked like the Oxford Chargers that he knew and felt his team was out of sync last week against Center Hill. On Friday night, he could not make the same complaint as the Chargers (10-1, 7-0 Region 1-5A) dominated Lake Cormorant (0-11, 0-7) 49-13 in the regular season finale. (November 9, 2014, Page 4B)

LAKE CORMORANT— Oxford head coach Johnny Hill felt his team did not look in sync last week against Center Hill. On Friday night he could not make the same complaint as the Chargers (10-1, 7-0 Region 1-5A) dominated the Lake Cormorant Gators (0-11, 0-7) 49-13 in the regular season finale.  (more…) (November 8, 2014)

Chargers want first string to stay sharp in finale

The Oxford Chargers have wrapped up the Region 1-5A title and the No. 1 playoff seed heading into the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs next week, but there is still a little house cleaning left to do before they can begin the journey to Starkville. (November 6, 2014, Page 6A)

OHS locks up region title on Senior Night

On a cold, subdued night at Bobby Holcomb Field, it was the return of a Charger stalwart that warmed up the Oxford faithful. After a month on the sideline with an injury, junior quarterback Jack Abraham made his return to help Oxford cap off Senior Night with a Region 1-5A championship. (November 2, 2014, Page 5B)

Chargers, Commodores have plenty to play for

Will it be a trick or a teat for the Oxford and Lafayette football teams tonight? The two area prep teams are preparing for their respective showdowns on All Hallow’s Eve. For the Chargers, they hope there is a treat in their bag by night’s when they host Center Hill with the chance to claim the Region 1-Class 5A title for the second consecutive season. The Commodores will be on the road looking out for any tricks from a winless Byhalia team that has plans of spoiling Lafayette’s chance for a perfect record in region play. (October 31, 2014, Page 6A)
