Bianco, Phillips lead Chargers to 49-16 victory

Oxford didn’t miss a beat without its quarterback Friday night. Backup Ben Bianco threw for a pair of scores in place of a hobbled Jack Abraham, Kenzie Phillips ran for a season-high 181 yards and four touchdowns, and the Chargers blew past Saltillo, 49-16, at Bobby Holcomb Field to stay unbeaten in Region 1-5A play. (October 5, 2014, Page 6B)

LHS, WVHS start, OHS continues region play

The important part of the schedule begins for a pair of area high school football teams tonight while it continues for another. Lafayette will travel to Ripley for its Region 2-4A opener while Water Valley will enterain Charleston to kick off Region 2-3A play. Oxford started its Region 1-5A slate with a 43-22 win at West Point a week ago and will try to make it two in a row against Saltillo at Bobby Holcomb Field. (October 3, 2014, Page 6A)

Chargers brace for Saltillo’s ground game

Oxford is all too familiar with Diamante Pounds. Saltillo’s senior running back has been wearing down Region 1-5A defenses for a season and a half. He finished with more than 2,000 yards last year in his first season with the Tigers after transferring from Shannon and is on pace for the same kind of production this season in Saltillo’s zone-read offense. There won’t be any surprises for the Chargers when Saltillo makes the trip to Bobby Holcomb Field on Friday for a matchup of region unbeatens. (October 2, 2014, Page 6A)

Chargers score 35 unanswered points to win at West Point

WEST POINT — The Oxford Chargers got off to an uncharacteristically bad start in their Region 1-5A opener against West Point, falling behind 22-8 at one point. They were able to climb out of the hole, though, scoring 35 unanswered points to defeat the Green Wave 43-22 at McCallister Field on Friday night. (September 28, 2014, Page 4B)

OHS uses momentum swing to roll to Crosstown Classic win

Oxford is making this rivalry thing look easy. Junior quarterback Jack Abraham set a single-game school passing record with 388 yards to go along with three touchdowns, and the Chargers took the Crosstown Classic trophy home for the third straight year with a 41-7 win over Lafayette on Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. (September 14, 2014, Page 4B)

Crosstown Classic highlights area prep schedule

The annual showdown between Lafayette and Oxford will take center stage tonight at Bobby Holcomb Field, highlighting this week’s area prep football schedule. The Chargers come into the Crosstown Classic riding the momentum of a convincing 50-15 victory at Cleveland East Side a week ago while Lafayette entered the win column for the first time with a 3-0 win over DeSoto Central. Water Valley hasn’t had the same success lately, taking a two-game losing streak into tonight’s game against Bruce at Bobby Clark Field. The Blue Devils are coming off a 28-7 loss to Calhoun City. (September 12, 2014, Page 1B)

Oxford, Lafayette set for latest rivalry tussle

Friendships have been put on hold this week. It’s time for the Crosstown Classic, which means loyalty to school and team is reigning supreme. Oxford and Lafayette will renew their annual rivalry on the football field Friday night. Kickoff from Bobby Holcomb Field is set for 7 p.m. (September 11, 2014, Page 8)

Chargers bounce back; roll to big win at East Side

CLEVELAND— Oxford coach Johnny Hill hardly recognized his team the first two weeks of the season. What the Chargers are capable of when they put it all together started coming back to him Friday night. (September 7, 2014, Page 4B)
