KOSCIUSKO — A dive, a drive and an outstanding individual effort on the mound proved to be the winning formula for the Lafayette Commodores to earn a 2-1 win over Kosciusko in the decisive game of a best-of-three Class 4A playoff series on Saturday.
LHS (22-5 overall) was able to advance to a second round matchup with North Pontotoc by holding off the Whippets when it mattered most. After LHS opened the series with an 11-3 win at home on Friday night, Kosciusko defeated the Commodores 9-4 in the second game to force the winner-take-all third game.

The Commodores scored early and often in their 18-1 win over Byhalia on Monday night. In the second to last region game of the year, LHS (19-4 overall, 8-1 in region play) scored six runs in the top of the first inning, eight in the second and four in the fourth. Lafayette’s John Jeffrey Nelson couldn’t have picked a better time for his first high school walk-off hit than Thursday night.
Lafayette’s potent lineup led the Commodores to two one-sided wins over Center Hill and New Albany over the weekend. The Commodores defeated Center Hill 13-2 on Friday night to remain perfect (6-0) in Region 2-4A play, while the ‘Dores smacked around the Bulldogs for the second time this year in a 14-9 win at New Albany.
