Calling all Mississippians: Movie needs help

Oxford Film Freak – The new Mississippi film, “The Help” needs your help. An open casting call for extras and some speaking roles will be held on June 19 at the Leflore County Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (June 10, 2010, Page 14)

Concert set to fund Burns-Belfry restoration

In order to raise funds for the oldest African-American structure in Oxford, the Burns-Belfry Heritage Cultural Center, the community is invited to the Worship Experience on April 23.
The concert, to be held at the Gertrude Ford Performing Arts Center, will have the Mississippi Mass Choir headlining along with F@VoR3D, University of MS Gospel Choir, and a local choir consisting of singers from several area churches and being organized by Tom Barrett of First Baptist Church.

Book offers another way to experience the blues

Think the “blues” can only be experienced through songs and music? Think again – and read Editor Don Whitten’s review of “Delta Blues,” an anthology of blues stories set in and around the Mississippi Delta. Book conference begins

University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones, author John Grisham and Square Books owner Richard Howorth paid tribute to Barry Hannah at a talk on “literary Oxford” Thursday as part of the Oxford Conference for the Book. The conference is dedicated to the late Hannah, who died Monday at age 67.

Conference for the Book: Grisham to speak

John Grisham will speak as part of the Oxford Conference for the Book Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Gertrude Ford Performing Arts Center. Grisham is scheduled to talk about “Literary Oxford” and his own life as a writer here in town. He and Barry Hannah were good friends, and Barry did a memorable job moderating an OCB session years ago in Fulton Chapel when Grisham and Stephen King discussed surviving success as writers.
