Rose shines for Rebels in victory
The value of a reliable kicker was never more evident than on Saturday when Ole Miss kicker Bryson Rose converted all five field goal attempts from distances of 24, 30, 30, 27 and 20 yards in the Rebels’ 43-21 win at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. (November 8, 2010, Page 1B)
Auburn’s Newton takes his game to a new level
Just how good is Auburn quarterback Cam Newton? That was the question that Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix attempted to answer prior to the Rebels’ game with the No. 3 Tigers at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The plan heading into the contest was to stop Newton from running, from beating the Rebels with his legs like he has so many other teams this year.
Nix’s plan worked as the Rebels held Newton to 45 yards on 11 carries and no touchdowns. But Newton was effective in a lot of other ways for the Tigers, who piled up 51 points and 572 yards, both season highs allowed for the Rebels. (November 1, 2010, Page 1B)
More focus needed for Rebels to make a turnaround
Focus and leaning on a few seniors are two of the many ways Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt was planning on turning around the Rebels’ fortunes Saturday night when they host Fresno State at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
A 1-2 start to the season, against teams that are not the best on the Rebels’ schedule, is not what Nutt and his staff anticipated in preseason.
But instead of dwelling on the slow start and feeling sorry about where the team is, Nutt said the only medicine is to get back to work and ultimately earn a win. (September 21, 2010, Page 6)
Nutt hopes Tulane win gives team confidence
Improvement was a key word used by Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt during his weekly press conference Monday afternoon. After opening the season with a double overtime loss to Jacksonville State, the Rebels were able to secure a win at Tulane. The victory, Nutt said, will give his team some needed confidence and make practices a little easier to handle moving forward as they prepare for the start of Southeastern Conference play. Rebels’ D takes a toll on quarterbacks
Ole Miss’ football practice on Tuesday was one dominated by the defense and the rain. Shortly after the punting and place-kicking work was completed, heavy rain and wind forced the action inside. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said the offense and defense ran 80 plays and did everything but tackle to the ground.
The Rebel defense, led by players such as defensive end Kentrell Lockett, forced several mistakes by quarterbacks Nathan Stanley, Jeremiah Masoli and Randall Mackey during the practice. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
