Football a hot topic of conversation these days
The pros are playing exhibition games, the local high schools have all posted an official victory and the Ole Miss Rebels play in just a week. With all kinds of football going on, Editor Don Whitten takes a closer look at some of the talk he’s heard about the 2010 season. (August 27, 2010, Page 4A)
Nutt holds off on QB decision
The announcement everyone has been waiting for will take at least another couple of days.
Following Ole Miss’ practice on Tuesday head coach Houston Nutt said that while he knows who will be getting the nod at quarterback, an extenuating circumstance is preventing him from clarifying publically who will be getting the bulk of the snaps under center. (August 25, 2010, Page 8)
Clarity with OM QBs expected today
Today’s football practice at Ole Miss is expected to bring a bit more clarity to the battle to become the starting quarterback against Jacksonville State in the season opener next week.
Both Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli performed well in the final scrimmage of the preseason camp held last Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Stanley missed just one pass (10-for-11) during his time under center and out of the shotgun and also added a 25-yard touchdown run once the team started red zone work. (August 24, 2010, Page 6)
Rebel QBs make case for No. 1 role in scrimmage
A difficult decision on which quarterback to start in the season opener against Jacksonville State is what Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt and his offensive staff is currently facing after Saturday’s “Meet the Rebels” scrimmage.
Both Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli performed well in front of an estimated crowd of 9,000 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Stanley was red-hot from a passing standpoint as he completed 10 of 11 throws for 117 yards. Stanley didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he did have a 25-yard touchdown run once the offense started working on situations inside the red zone. (August 23, 2010, Page 1B)
QB competition beginning to narrow, Mackey odd man out?
The eventual quarterback separation that has been discussed briefly over the last week looks like it is underway. (more…) (August 21, 2010)
Rebels earn much needed day off
After spending much of the last two weeks on the gridiron preparing for the upcoming season, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt opted to reward his players by essentially giving them Thursday evening off — sort of.
While the players didn’t have to hit the practice field, they were still expected to take part in film sessions at the Indoor Practice Facility. (August 20, 2010, Page 6A)
Rebels’ D takes a toll on quarterbacks
Ole Miss’ football practice on Tuesday was one dominated by the defense and the rain. Shortly after the punting and place-kicking work was completed, heavy rain and wind forced the action inside. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said the offense and defense ran 80 plays and did everything but tackle to the ground.
The Rebel defense, led by players such as defensive end Kentrell Lockett, forced several mistakes by quarterbacks Nathan Stanley, Jeremiah Masoli and Randall Mackey during the practice. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
Harris, Davis perform well for Rebels
All eyes were on the quarterback competition during Ole Miss’ first full scrimmage of the preseason Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
While all three signal callers did their best to prove why each deserves to start, it was running back Enrique Davis and receiver Melvin Harris who may have left the biggest impressions with onlookers.
Davis broke free for a 56-yard touchdown on the eighth play of the scrimmage to make a case why he should remain in the conversation as a front-line running back in the Ole Miss offense. (August 16, 2010, Page 6)
Masoli hopes to put past behind him
By now you’ve heard the story of Jeremiah Masoli and why he’s in Oxford wearing red and blue instead of Oregon’s green and yellow.
What could have been a Heisman Trophy campaign and quest for a national title has now turned into a search for redemption after being dismissed from Oregon and landing at Ole Miss.
During Monday’s Ole Miss Media Day, Masoli never shied away from questions regarding where he’d been and what he may — or may not — have actually done. (August 11, 2010, Page 8)
