Lafayette’s football players dominated the Region 2-4A team, which was voted on and released Thursday by the region’s coaches. Quarterback Jeremy Liggins was named Player of the Year. There were a lot reasons why the Lafayette Commodores finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in the state and with a second straight MHSAA Class 4A state title trophy to put on display. A bevy of talented players and a very organized coaching staff are at the top of the list of reasons why the Commodores reeled off another 16-0 season, but leadership provided by key players was also a major reason for the immense success. Lafayette’s 16-0 record garnered them a final ranking of No. 1 in the final prep football poll released by the Associated Press Wednesday. LHS received five votes for No. 1, while Olive Branch, who won the 6A title, also claimed five votes to finish in a tie with the Commodores as the top team in the state. Oxford remains in the hunt for the Class 5A playoffs today thanks to another great individual performance by senior running back Mont Dean. While the entire OHS team played a part in earning a 35-28 win over Saltillo this past Friday night, Dean’s 365-yard, five-touchdown performance was singularly the biggest contribution in a game the Chargers had to win.
It was that individual performance, on a week where several top players in the area stepped up to perform at a high level, that made him the Player of the Week for the third time this season. (October 25, 2011, Page 8)
Staying true to typical form, the Lafayette Commodores went on the road and up-ended Senatobia on senior night 48-8.
