Oxford teams win powerlifting titles

Oxford’s two powerlifting teams continued to show how strong they both are this weekend by winning the regional powerlifting meets at the OMS gym. It was the first regional titles for the school in either the girls or boys divisions. (February 21, 2011, Page 6)

Oxford’s Billups wins top award in 5A

Oxford’s success on the football field this season was translated on the Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 5A All-State team that was recently released.

Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was named Player of the Year after throwing for 2,915 yards and 33 touchdowns for the 9-4 Chargers. Billups ranked second in the entire state in both passing yards and touchdowns thrown.

Joining Billups on the first team offense for the MAC team were senior wide receiver DeShaun McNeal and senior tight end Larry Pettis. Senior offensive lineman Terry Johnson was also named to the second team on offense. Johnson will be playing in Saturday’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Classic in Mobile, Ala. (December 10, 2010, Page 6A)

Ivy paces Chargers win over Senatobia

A sluggish start on offense for the Oxford Chargers on Friday night was rectified by the speed of wide receiver Stan Ivy. Just a day after watching his son, Stantavias Ivy Jr., come into the world, Ivy played a big part in the Chargers’ 35-7 win over Senatobia.

Ivy scored three straight touchdowns in the game for Oxford, including two in an 11.8 second time span, that increased a 7-0 lead to 21-0 heading into halftime for the Chargers (3-1 overall). (September 13, 2010, Page 4B)

Dean carries load in first scrimmage

Oxford High’s first football scrimmage of the 2010 preseason Friday night provided some positive results in all three phases for coach Johhny Hill and his staff to build on.

Some of the highlights for the Chargers’ first-team offense, led by quarterback Guy Cameron Billups and running back Mont Dean, was producing a combined four touchdowns. Also, the team’s main defensive unit was able hold the offense down on the goal line on a fourth-down situation.

Chargers finish second in Wildcat Invitational

Led by DeAndre Patrick’s individual performance, the Oxford boys powerlifting team finished second in the Wildcat Invitational. Several lifters fared well in the event that saw the Chargers finish second as a team overall. (February 10, 2010, Page Page 9)
