Parents: Details needed on block schedule
Several parents expressed their concerns Tuesday with Lafayette High School officials considering implementing a four-by-four block schedule next school year.
Lafayette County School Board officials were present at the meeting held at the Lafayette Middle School to hear the parents’ reactions and questions about the new class scheduling system.
LHS win gets ringing endorsement

Chargers working with less experience this year
Experience is something Oxford High boys basketball coach Drew Tyler has always had working for him during his previous 13 years. No matter how many players graduated from the super successful program, Tyler was always able to reload and move forward.
But for the first time in recent memory, Tyler will rely on several inexperienced players to win games on the court. Oxford, which opens its season Monday at home against Potts Camp, has four seniors and six juniors listed on its roster, but only three have played substantial varsity minutes, a fact that makes Tyler call the 2010-11 season more of a rebuilding season than one where he reloads. Area coaches fondly remember Wright
The mysterious disappearance of former Lafayette High School basketball standout Lorenzen Wright has unfortunately been solved by Memphis area police officers. Wright, who has been missing for over a week, was found dead Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area located in Southeast Memphis, according to information provided by Wright’s family to various media outlets.
Wright, 34, played his first three years of high school basketball at Lafayette under the direction of coach Mike Foster, Lafayette’s current school superintendent, before moving to play his senior season at Booker T. Washington in Memphis. (July 29, 2010, Page 6)

Swindoll hired to lead LHS tennis
Lafayette Athletics Director Jeff Nelson knew his new tennis coach, Debbie Swindoll, was a special athlete and intense competitor when he first came in contact with her at a middle school basketball tournament in Pope.
As Nelson prepared to help lead Lafayette’s middle school team to a victory, he saw Swindoll show her skills as a member of Winona’s team and he marveled at how hard Swindoll played the game. It was that drive to be the best coupled with an extensive knowledge in tennis that separated Swindoll from the rest of potential candidates in his search to replace former coach Marty Pearson. It’s also why he was so pleased that his recommendation to hire Swindoll was approved by the Lafayette School Board Tuesday night. (July 7, 2010, Page 6)
LHS earns first All-Sports Award
Six years of hard work and steady building of the athletic program through the hiring of good coaches who developed athletes in the proper manner have paid off for Lafayette High School.
Lafayette won its first Mississippi High School Activities Association All-Sports Award Sunday. The award is given annually in recognition for an outstanding and balanced sports program. LHS garnered 305 points to capture the Class 4A crown, 15 points more than second-place finisher Pontotoc. Points are awarded for teams that make the MHSAA playoffs, while teams that win championships earn 30 total points. Lafayette’s boys powerlifters totaled 30 points thanks to its state title earlier this year. Teams that finished in second place, such as the football and girls basketball teams, each totaled 24 points. Lafayette made the playoffs in every sport but boys basketball and boys soccer this past season with volleyball, football, girls basketball, girls soccer, both powerlifting teams, both cross country teams, bowling and both track teams competing for team or individual titles in Jackson at various MHSAA state championship events. Robertson takes over as LHS boys basketball coach
The search for a new boys basketball coach at Lafayette came to an end Wednesday as Eric Robertson agreed to lead the Commodores in the future. Robertson will replace former coach Teague Burchfield on the bench next season after agreeing to add the position to his title on Lafayette’s football team. (April 15, 2010, Page 6)
