Shaw named Citizen of the Year

The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce held its annual dinner Tuesday night at the Oxford Conference Center. For their service to the LOU community, Dr. Jean Shaw was recognized as Citizen of the Year and Lynn Wells was presented the Outstanding Service Award. (June 8, 2011, Page 1A)

Exchange Club presents highest honor to two

For the first time anyone in the Oxford Exchange Club can remember, the club gave out two Book of Golden Deeds awards last night at a special dinner meeting. This year’s awards went to Jean Shaw — leader of the LOU Homeless Task Force and the Alpha Mu chapter of the Kappa Delta Sorority. (May 6, 2011, Page 1A)

Homeless Task Force to focus on causes of problem

To be more than just a Band-Aid to the growing homeless problem in Oxford and Lafayette County, the Oxford Homeless Task Force voted Sunday to launch a new initiative to form a Transitional Housing program.

Sherry Williams-Jenkins heads up the shelter committee. After reviewing different types of shelters and the feasibility of having a homeless shelter in Oxford, the committee decided the best way to offer more than just temporary fixes is to institute a more long-term solution. (October 11, 2010, Page 1A)

More join effort to help needy

On a mission to provide a weekly meal to the needy, about 50 folks representing every walk of life came together Tuesday evening to learn more about the program slated to begin in September.
College students and the elderly, artists and social workers, the rich and the not-so-rich, gathered at the Stone Center to see what they could do to help provide “More than a Meal” to those members of the community who could use some assistance from time to time. (June 23, 2010, Page 1A)

Community responds to growing homeless problem
