Offense shows improvement in latest scrimmage
Ole Miss’ final scrimmage before the season opener Sept. 1 featured an improved offensive attack led by the running of freshmen backs I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. First-year coach Hugh Freeze said following the annual Meet the Rebels scrimmage that Mathers, who finished with 100 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, and Walton, who had 42 yards on eight carries, had been steady, if not spectacular, during summer camp. Freeze pleased with inside runs of Parker
One of the misconceptions about Ole Miss’ new-look offense installed by coach Hugh Freeze is that the quarterback passes every down and the running game, well, is soft and unable to get the tough yard on a consistent basis. Freeze has tried to erase that misnomer about his offense since he was hired and most recently during summer camp.
He pointed out after Thursday’s practice session — one that included some tough runs made by former South Panola standout Nick Parker — that the offense is balanced, if not leaning towards more run plays. (August 17, 2012, Page 6A)

Freeze pleased with first class of players
Ole Miss’ final verbal commitment, and subsequent letter of intent, of the 2012 football signing class made the biggest impact Wednesday for first-year coach Hugh Freeze and his staff.
As highly rated and needed as Aberdeen defensive end Channing Ward is to the signing class, Oxford, Ala., Trae Elston (6-foot, 183 pounds) coming on board Wednesday and picking the Rebels over LSU and Oklahoma State live on ESPNU from his high school helped finish out Freeze’s first class in style. Freeze garners 11 new signatures Wednesday
Hugh Freeze’s first football signing class wasn’t big on numbers, but it did include some important players for the future of the program. By the Oxford EAGLE’s press time at 10:15 a.m., Ole Miss received a total of 11 National Letters of Intent from players across the state and region. Four players — quarterback Bo Wallace, defensive back Dehendret Collins, offensive lineman Darone Bailey and offensive lineman Pierce Burton — already signed scholarship papers and are enrolled in the spring semester.
