VIDEO BLOG: Oxford D proves its mettle in Crosstown shutout

BLOG–Following a strong summer showing on the 7-on-7 camp circuit and equipped with an SEC recruit at wideout in Ole Miss commit D.K. Metcalf and a pair of talented tailbacks in senior Jarius Barnes and sophomore Kenzie Phillips, the Oxford offense created a lot of buzz heading into this season.

But the Chargers’ defense is starting to prove that it’s no slouch. (more…) (September 14, 2013)

Oxford outlasts Jackson Prep

The Oxford Chargers spotted visiting Jackson Prep a quick touchdown, overcame a rash of early penalties with a 16-0 scoring spurt and then held on to post a 32-20 victory Friday night in their season opener at Bobby Holcomb Field. (August 26, 2013, Page 1B)

Oxford outscores Prep 32-20 in opener

A 17-yard return of a blocked punt by K.T. McCollin capped a 16-0 Oxford run to answer an early Jackson Prep touchdown in the first quarter and the homestanding Chargers held on from there to post a 32-20 victory in the public school-private school contest Friday night.

Two sophomores played a key role for Oxford in its victory over the defending MAIS Class AAA state champion Patriots. Quarterback Jack Abraham connected on 20 of 30 passes for 242 yards, including touchdown passes on Oxford’s first and last possessions of the game. Wideout/defensive back D.K. Metcalf, who hauled in an 18-yard TD pass from Abraham with 1:52 left to clinch the victory, finished the night with six receptions for 133 yards along with blocking the punt McCollin returned and recovering a muffed punt by Prep to set up another score.

Jarius Barnes added a rushing touchdown for Oxford, while Cody Mills kicked 28 and 24 yard field goals.

Prep, 13-0 a year ago, got touchdown runs from Ian McGraw and Ty Higginbotham along with a 7-yard TD pass from Gene Wood to Parker Caracci. Wood threw for 168 yards, Caracci totaled five catches for 55 yards and Higginbotham had 14 carries for 80 yards, including a 30-yard scoring run that got the Patriots within five points (25-20) with 5:01 to go.

“This was a big game and a big win,” OHS coach Johnny Hill said. “There were a lot of Prep supporters here and a lot of folks for us. There was a lot of excitement in the air.

“It was good to see us handle that early adversity. The blocked point helped with momentum and the offense got a big score at the end,” Hill added. “Coach (Ricky) Black and his staff do a great job. We knew they’d play hard for four quarters and they did.”
