Oxford defense earns Player of the Week nod

Oxford’s defenders must have felt hot following the Chargers’ 19-0 win over Lafayette in the annual Crosstown Classic. In a game that was dominated by the Chargers from start to finish, the OHS defense shined the brightest in a victory that not only ended a six-game losing streak to the Commodores, but also ended Lafayette’s 34-game winning streak.

It was an effort that won’t be forgotten by anyone associated with OHS for a long time. It was an effort — by all 11 starters and numerous backups — that garnered the unit this week’s Player of the Week honors.

Oxford defensive coordinator Steve Herring was beyond pleased with the effort his players gave in the victory and said hustling was the key to it all. (September 4, 2012, Page 8)

Blue Devils grow in win over CCHS

CALHOUN CITY — The Water Valley Blue Devils grew considerably as a team in their latest game with the Calhoun City Wildcats on Friday night. Instead of losing another heartbreaker to CCHS like Water Valley has the past two years, the Blue Devils defeated the Wildcats 38-21 on the road. The victory not only improved WVHS to 3-0 on the year, but it showed the rest of Class 3A — and head coach Brad Embry — that the program has taken another step toward building a championship team and program. (September 3, 2012, Page 3B)

Dominant is what the Oxford Lady Chargers were Saturday in the Region 1-5A meet held at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field. Oxford finished first in the meet with 212 points, almost 100 more than second-place finisher Center Hill (117). The Lady Chargers also finished with seven first-place finishes and a bevy of seconds to earn the title. First-place finishes garner 10 points, while second-place finishes garner eight. Blue Devils take care of business, clobber Cougars

RANDOLPH — Friday night the Water Valley Blue Devils made the short trip east to South Pontotoc and did exactly what head coach Brad Embry wanted them to do by taking care of business.

Against an overmatched Cougars squad, the majority of the Blue Devils saw playing time in the 49-7 victory. (October 10, 2011, Page 1B)
