MLK Jr. Day events planned

From the moment the sun rises on Monday until it sets in the evening, events in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. will offer area residents an opportunity to share a meal and prayers in the name of peace and community togetherness.

Kicking off at 7 a.m. will be the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration in Abbeville that begins with a full breakfast buffet at the Abbeville School on County Road 115.

As the sun starts its descent on the LOU community, folks will gather in Oxford at 6 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, just west of the Square, for the annual candle light vigil hosted by Second Baptist, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Eta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Inc. (January 14, 2011, Page 1A)

Art gallery sells art to help African orphans

The S&J Gallery and Collectibles on the Square is selling African art to help support orphans in Kenya who lost their parents because of the HIV/AIDS virus.

The art was sent by the head of the Living Testimony Organization in Kenya at the request of Oxford resident Janice Carr who learned about the organization and its plight while visiting Africa this fall. (December 10, 2010, Page 3A)

Local woman reaches ‘roof of Africa’

View snow at the summit

Janice Carr walked for six days up Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, as part of a personal life goal that she used to help raise funds for Angel Ranch, an emergency shelter for the victims of child abuse and neglect. (October 7, 2010, Page 1)

United Way sets higher goal

The United Way scaled back its fundraising goal in 2008 in expectancy of lower donations due to a failing economy.

In 2007, the goal was $450,000. It was dropped to $425,000 in 2009.

“We blew it out the top, despite a tough economy, and raised $427,000,” campaign chairman Jeff Triplette said at the United Way annual campaign kick-off luncheon on Wednesday. “That was above our goal.”

This year’s goal is $465,000. (September 16, 2010, Page 1)

Pledges sought for Angel Ranch benefit

With her trip to Africa just a month away, Janice Carr is hoping to gain more pledges in her attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro on behalf of Angel Ranch. Pledges can be made online at www.angelranch.org or by calling 234-3320. (August 11, 2010, Page 1)

Bridging divides: Around the ‘Table’

Before racial divides can be torn down, people need to come together and simply listen to the each other, to understand how others feel, think and learn how experiences have shaped their lives. That’s why about 25 Oxford-area residents took part in a recent retreat designed to open dialogue between the races.

Training underway for climb

Sure, we’re living in the hills of north Mississippi. But when it comes to training to climb one of the tallest mountains in the world, it takes a lot of hills to get there. Abbeville woman Janice Carr is set to climb Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro this fall, both to fulfill a personal goal and to raise money for Angel Ranch. (March 19, 2010, Page 1A)

Abbeville works toward restoration

About 40 local volunteers gathered Monday at the old Gordon School in Abbeville to clean up the building in preparation for it to be restored. The community would like to see the building host events, exhibits on local history, programs for youth and even professional office space. (January 19, 2010, Page 1)

Park in progress

Western Hills neighbors joined with members of the Amos Network Saturday to continue work on a new neighborhood park. The idea has been around for some 25 years, but the partnership between the two groups is finally bringing it to fruition. (January 18, 2010, Page 1)
