Oxford shows maturity in win over NHS

Chris Baughman may be in his first season as Oxford High’s head baseball coach, but he seems to have already mastered the delivery of the between-inning speech.

Baughman’s discussion with his players after the visiting New Hope Trojans scored four runs off OHS starter James Lear in the top of the first inning on Friday was brief and to the point. Chargers fall to New Hope

A home run provided by Dillon Hawkins in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted New Hope to a 7-6 win over Oxford in the first region game of the season Tuesday. at New Hope. Hawkins finished the game 2-for-4 and his home run helped the Trojans break a 6-6 tie. Zac Barber was saddled with the loss for the Chargers, who are now 6-5 on the year. Chargers shine in spring break tournament

Spring break has never been about beach trips and time off for the Oxford High baseball team and coaching staff.

Chargers go 1-1 to start season

Oxford’s baseball team rebounded from a 13-1 loss to Northwest Rankin Saturday to post a come-from-behind win over Ridgeland. The Chargers’ 5-4 win was aided by several players, including Hunt Halford, who earned the win on the mound in relief of starter Zac Barber. Chargers rally to defeat Callaway in playoff marathon

A season of close losses finally turned in favor of the Oxford Chargers at just the right time Saturday against Callaway in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The Chargers advanced to Tuesday’s 5A North Half title match against Pearl by defeating Callaway 3-2 in  penalty kicks. Oxford (13-4-1 overall) gained a huge measure of revenge with the win over Callaway, the only team to beat OHS last season, by playing as a team and learning from some of the tight games it had been involved in during the season. (January 31, 2011, Page 6)

Oxford runs over Saltillo in 5A playoffs

Oxford forward Shea Mnichowski had an idea of how many goals he wanted to score heading into Thursday night’s Class 5A playoff game with Saltillo at Bobby Holcomb Field.

Mnichowski said he told Chargers coach Jamie Perkins that if he scored four goals, he wanted to score five before being lifted from the game in order to play a younger member of the team. (more…) (January 28, 2011, Page 6A)

Oxford takes two games from Lafayette

Fresh off of an uncharacteristic three-game losing streak, the Oxford boys soccer team took out its frustrations on crosstown rival Lafayette on a frigid Friday night cruising past the Commodores 8-0 at William L. Buford Stadium. Earlier in the evening, the Lady Chargers scored in the opening minutes of their game against Lafayette and held on for a 1-0 victory at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.

Having lost three games prior to Friday’s big win, Oxford boys coach Jamie Perkins said he didn’t change anything strategically with the team. He just had a heart-to-heart talk with his players. (December 13, 2010, Page 1B)

Chargers, Lady Chargers open with tourney titles

The Oxford High soccer teams got the 2010-11 season off to a good start by winning the Patriot Classic held at Lewisburg on Saturday.

The Lady Chargers went 3-0 to capture the title, while the Chargers went 2-0-1. Oxford’s girls defeated Lake Cormorant 3-0 in the first game, North Pontotoc 3-0 in the second and then topped Lewisburg 1-0 in the title game. (November 8, 2010, Page 3B)

Roberson captures 100th win as OHS coach

Oxford coach Bradley Roberson reached a significant milestone Thursday night with the Chargers’ 17-4 win over Independence. Roberson’s 100th win as OHS coach came in a game that also put the Chargers back above .500 (10-9 overall) and gave them another dose of confidence going into tonight’s Division 2-5A game with West Point at Edwin Moak Field. (April 9, 2010, Page 6A)
