LHS rolls over Shannon

SPORTS BLOG: SHANNON — The Lafayette Commodores showed why they are the top team in Mississippi once again Friday night with a 56-14 win over Shannon.

LHS QB Jeremy Liggins showed why he is one of the top college recruits in the state as well, this time though, it was with one of the nation’s top college coaches in LSU’s Les Miles roaming the sidelines. (more…) (September 16, 2011)

LHS dominates Greenwood

GREENWOOD — Prior to the season, Lafayette coach Anthony Hart called Friday night’s matchup with Greenwood a “sandwich” game because it came in between the highly anticipated opener with Tupelo and the annual Crosstown Classic matchup with the Oxford Chargers.

Fortunately for Hart, the only thing that got sandwiched were the Greenwood Bulldogs, who proved to be no real challenge in a 42-0 loss to the Commodores. (more…) (August 29, 2011, Page 1B)

Lafayette lifters experienced, looking for more accolades

Experienced lifters is a common thread the Lafayette girls and boys powerlifting teams share this year. A season after the Commodores won the Class 4A title and the Lady Commodores finished third in the state in its Class II division, several lifters who were on those teams return to both squads in the attempt to repeat those lofty results. Title game win epitomizes Lafayette’s season

A season that started in the scorching heat of July culminated with a win in the MHSAA’s Class 4A state championship for the Lafayette Commodores Saturday evening at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Lafayette became the first school in the state to win 16 games in a season by knocking off North Pike 31-6 to capture the school’s first football state title.

Focus, dedication and desire were just three of the many intangibles the Commodores displayed on the field on a consistent basis this year, while an overpowering defense and offense, led by quarterback Jeremy Liggins and running back Demarkus Dennis, seemed to dispatch opponents with little trouble each week.

Saturday’s victory over the Jaguars epitomized how the Commodores won games all season. Liggins bullied his way through the Jaguars’ defense for three scores and 150 yards, while Dennis moved the chains with dazzling runs through the middle and outside of Lafayette’s formations. (December 6, 2010, Page 1B)

LHS Commodores capture 4A North Half title

The No. 1 ranked football team in Class 4A all season is just one win away from actually being crowned as the best.

Lafayette’s Commodores advanced to Jackson to play in the MHSAA’s 4A state championship game for the second straight season after defeating Noxubee County 20-0 Friday night in the 4A North Half title game.

Friday’s win didn’t necessarily come easy for LHS (15-0 overall), but a defense that has been tremendously consistent all season long continued to shine and make things even tougher for the Tigers (13-2) on offense that it was on the Commodores, who have now only allowed 19 points in four playoff games. (November 29, 2010, Page 1B)

Defense, Liggins pace ‘Dores in shutout

Another dominant performance that showed the experience of the No. 1 Lafayette Commodores as much as it did their overall athletic ability was the backdrop of Friday’s 35-0 win over New Albany in the Class 4A playoffs.

LHS (14-0 overall) advanced to its second straight North Half title game by dismantling a Bulldog team that had won its first 13 games of the season. The Commodores, who will now play Noxubee County for the right to advance to Jackson for the MHSAA state championship, caused four turnovers in the win and used the mistakes to score three touchdowns on short fields. (November 22, 2010, Page 3B)
