Jake Morgan

More than just playing for fun

COLUMN: Fans in attendance of Saturday’s 7-0 win for the current Rebel squad over the alumni team got a glimpse at what the backbone of Ole Miss’ pitching staff will likely resemble when the season opens on Feb. 18 against Wright State.

Against the professional Rebel squad — which, admittedly, for the most part had not faced live pitching in over four months — Ole Miss’ three likely weekend starters and closer allowed just two hits during nine innings of work. (more…) (February 7, 2011, Page 2B)

OM Diamond Rebels begin work for season

Swinging the new BBCOR (ball-bat coefficient of restitution) bats that have been implemented by the NCAA for the 2011 season, the Ole Miss baseball squad officially got started on the practice field on Friday.

On Saturday and Sunday, it was the pitching staff that appeared to get the best of the batters in two intrasquad scrimmages as a total of 10 runs were scored during the two games. (January 31, 2011, Page 6)

New faces stand out for Diamond Rebels on first weekend

Getting used to new faces and making adjustments will headline most of Ole Miss’ fall ball season, which began this past week.

“It was a good weekend and a good start,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “There’s a lot of new faces and a lot of the new guys did well.”

Included on Ole Miss’ current 38-man roster are 20 new players.

Of those players, corner infielder/outfielder Preston Overbey may have made the best first impression on Bianco. (September 20, 2010, Page 3B)

Rebels keep finding ways to win games

COLUMN — Life doesn’t always go as planned.

In fact, more often than not our road from Point A to point B is filled with unforeseen detours.

In sports, having the ability to adapt when things don’t go as planned may be as important as anything, and this year the Ole Miss baseball team has made a living off of reacting to the unexpected. (April 27, 2010, Page 8)

Hashman making play for bigger role

The No. 20 Ole Miss baseball team has come a long way in terms of finding itself during its nonconference schedule. For starters, roles on the field have begun to be defined with freshmen Alex Yarbrough and Tanner Mathis solidifying positions at second base and left field respectively heading into this weekend’s three-game series at No. 26 Kentucky (14-3 overall).

In addition to David Goforth and Aaron Barrett locking down the closer and Saturday starter roles, one player who has flown under the radar is senior outfielder Taylor Hashman. (March 19, 2010, Page 7A)

Goforth ready for role of Ole Miss closer

OLE MISS BASEBALL — With the loss of Jake Morgan in the fall to injury, it’s David Goforth’s turn to step up and assume the role of closer for the Ole Miss Rebels. The sophomore from Neshoba Central was Morgan’s setup man last season and posted a 1-1 record with three saves in 25 appearances. With Goforth’s move to closer, redshirt freshman Brett Huber is slated as Ole Miss’ setup guy. (February 18, 2010, Page 10)

Rebels will show true character in 2010

OLE MISS BASEBALL — Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco officially addressed the media for the first time on Monday during the baseball team’s Media Day. Bianco focused on discussing the team’s ability to overcome a tough offseason and added that he was proud of the way his team has responded. (February 16, 2010, Page 9)
