Jackets swarm Chargers in second round

Motivated by what Starkville head coach Brian Bennett described as a less than desired performance in their regular-season matchup with Oxford, the visiting Jackets played an aggressive breed of soccer that netted them a 4-2 road victory and a trip to the third round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The loss eliminates the Chargers (13-3-3 overall) from the playoffs. (January 30, 2012, Page 2B)

Oxford takes two games from Lafayette

Fresh off of an uncharacteristic three-game losing streak, the Oxford boys soccer team took out its frustrations on crosstown rival Lafayette on a frigid Friday night cruising past the Commodores 8-0 at William L. Buford Stadium. Earlier in the evening, the Lady Chargers scored in the opening minutes of their game against Lafayette and held on for a 1-0 victory at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.

Having lost three games prior to Friday’s big win, Oxford boys coach Jamie Perkins said he didn’t change anything strategically with the team. He just had a heart-to-heart talk with his players. (December 13, 2010, Page 1B)

Regents plays NSA tough

A strong first half couldn’t be duplicated for the Regents School football team in its most recent action with North Sunflower Academy. Despite owning a 14-12 lead at the half, Regents lost 34-22 in the game played at Drew.

Regents fell behind 12-0 in the first quarter before rallying to take a lead thanks to a 10-yard touchdown run from Zac Jenkins and a 20-yard TD pass from Nate McManus to Josh McManus. Hunter Stewart added the two-point play to round out the scoring in the first half.

North Sunflower scored 22 points in the third quarter to regain the lead. Stewart then capped the scoring for both teams with a 10-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and a subsequent two-point play.

Nate McManus finished the game 4-for-11 for 91 yards through the air and 68 yards rushing on just five carries.

Jenkins led Regents in the rushing category with 138 yards on 14 carries, while Stewart had 24 yards, while Josh McManus rushed four times for 18 yards. (September 27, 2010, Page 3B)
