It took 13 games for the Lafayette High School baseball team to record its first home run of the 2012 season, proving the old adage of good things come to those who wait.
John Murphree broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning when he belted an offering from New Albany pitcher Ben Foster over the left field fence for a two-run home run to put the ‘Dores ahead 4-2 in what would turn out to be a 7-2 win over the Division 2-4A rival Bulldogs at W.V. Tuesday evening’s loss was a difficult one to swallow for the Lafayette Commodores.
Despite leading for the majority of the game, Lafayette allowed Marshall Academy to rally in the sixth inning and eventually claim a 5-3 victory on Day 2 of the Oxford Spring Break Tournament at Edwin Moak Field.

The Lafayette ninth-grade football team ended its season with a 14-0 win over New Albany on Monday. John Murphree scored on a 12-yard run, while brother Eli Murphree added a 2-point conversion to give Lafayette an 8-0 lead at the half. Hunter Bishop scored on an 80-yard touchdown reception in the second half off a throw from Eli Murphree. Landon Busby and Eli Murphree both had interceptions. Lafayette’s middle school baseball team earned two lopsided 14-0 wins over South Panola Thursday. Both wins were no-hitters for the Commodores, who had four pitchers combine to strike out 19 batters.
Lafayette’s two middle school squads came up big on Tuesday sweeping Senatobia in two games. The Commodore seventh-grade squad squeaked past Senatobia 8-6, while the eight-graders topped the Warriors 30-6. (September 30, 2010, Page 9)
