Houston Nutt is the head football coach for the Ole Miss Rebels. The Arkansas native graduated from Oklahoma State, where he played quarterback, after transferring from Arkansas.
Barksdale dismissed from Rebels
The on-again, off-again soap opera that has surrounded former South Panola standout and Mr. Football Darius “Tig” Barksdale is off — again.
On Saturday, one day after both head coach Houston Nutt and athletics director Pete Boone sounded optimistic that Barksdale would be a member of the Rebels in 2010, Ole Miss released a statement saying Barksdale and the team had parted ways due to personal issues.
Following Sunday’s practice, Nutt elaborated a bit on the situation.
It’s go time: Rebel newcomers report, Masoli and more
So today wasn’t exactly the first official day of Ole Miss football, but it’s close. Today was the first day newcomers were required to be on campus and Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt addressed the media at the Indoor Practice Facility to discuss the youngins, Jeremiah Masoli and more. Clower story sums up debate over new Ole Miss QB
I am passionate about football. The August heat reminds me of long, hot two-a-day practices. There is nothing like the smell of the field after it has been mowed and freshly painted before the first game. I have always enjoyed the excitement within the community as everyone counts down the days to the first ballgame.
Since I am no longer coaching, I have been able to shift my enthusiasm to Ole Miss football. Needless to say, I have been very interested in all of the media attention surrounding the transfer of the new quarterback. I am never surprised by what commentators, sportswriters and fans say and rarely surprised at what their motivation is
A fan of another SEC school probably thinks Jeremiah Masoli shouldn’t be allowed to walk on at Ole Miss. It might be said that Kirk Herbstreit’s love for Ohio State keeps him from being able to say anything positive about the SEC. A sportswriter may decide that the way to sell an article is to be critical of Houston Nutt and his decision. (August 5, 2010, Page 6)
Masoli grab-bag
The month leading up to the start of the college football season is supposed to be a placid time — the quiet before the storm, if you will.
Unfortunately, with the dismissal of receiver Pat Patterson, Raymond Cotton’s decision to transfer and the Masoli saga, July was anything but calm. (more…) (August 4, 2010)

Former Oregon QB chooses to play for Rebels
The uncertainty surrounding Ole Miss’ quarterbacks appears to have been laid to rest — at least for now.
On Sunday, former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli confirmed that he plans to join the Ole Miss football team this fall as a walk on.
“I’m excited to get another chance,” Masoli told Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples on Sunday. “I’m so grateful and thankful.
“I can’t wait to play some SEC ball, to be honest with you.” (August 2, 2010, Page 6)

Adding Masoli to Rebels not an easy decision
SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — It would be really, really easy to sit here and criticize Ole Miss head football coach Houston Nutt for entertaining the idea of securing the services of jettisoned Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. (more…) (July 27, 2010)
Cotton surprises Rebels with departure
Ole Miss’ depth at quarterback took a hit over the weekend when redshirt freshman Raymond Cotton announced he was leaving the team. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Cotton made his decision public Saturday after reportedly wrangling over staying with the Rebels or leaving with his parents’ help.
Ole Miss head football coach Houston Nutt was hoping Cotton would decide to stay with the team and compete for the starting quarterback job like he did this past spring when he met with the media Friday at the Southeastern Conference’s Media Days. Nutt seemed optimistic about Cotton staying with the team, especially if he would listen to his father and mother who both wanted him to remain in Oxford. (July 26, 2010, Page 6)
Is Masoli worth the risk or not?
There comes a point where you may begin to bargain with yourself.
A week ago former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was someone else’s problem, a kid that you had pegged as someone with questionable character.
In the recent days, however, with the news that strong-armed quarterback Raymond Cotton plans to leave the Ole Miss football program, you may have found yourself wondering to yourself just how bad Masoli really is.
Now, because of Cotton’s decision to transfer — coupled with the uncertainty of Nathan Stanley as the de facto signal caller — you begin to bargain with yourself. (July 26, 2010, Page 6)
