A federal judge ruled Monday to unseal Richard “Dickie” Scruggs’ motion to set aside his conviction and sentence in the judicial bribery case that involved former Circuit Court Judge Bobby DeLaughter. (October 4, 2011, Page 2)

New judge to be sworn in on Thursday

An investiture ceremony will be held Thursday for newly elected Third Circuit Court Judge John A. Gregory who will fill the seat left open by Judge Henry L. Lackey, who officially ends his 17 years on the bench on Friday.

The ceremony will take place at 2 this afternoon at the Chickasaw County Courthouse in Okolona, where Gregory served as county prosecutor for 23 years. (December 30, 2010, Page 2A)

Judicial races decided

Judge Edwin H. Roberts didn’t spend this morning lounging around enjoying the afterglow of winning the election last night.

He was up, bright and early, picking up his campaign signs.

Roberts won Tuesday’s election and holds onto his chancery court judge seat for another four years. He took 75 percent of the votes in Lafayette County and 69 percent of the votes for all of District 18, which covers five counties. His opponent, Helen Kennedy Robinson, had 31 percent of the votes.

Also retaining his place on the bench was Circuit Court Judge Robert W. Elliott, who won with 57 percent of the vote. Chickasaw attorney John Gregory snagged the seat occupied by retiring Judge Henry Lackey of Calhoun County. He beat out attorneys Tom Levidiotis and Dave Rozier, both of Oxford, with 63 percent of the votes. Court of Appeals Judge Donna Barnes of Tupelo defeated challenger, attorney Kelly Mims, with 53 percent of the vote. (November 3, 2010, Page 1)

New public defender appointed for Circuit Court

Attorney Josh Turner wanted to give back to the community where he was born and raised.

Now he has his chance.

On Monday, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors approved hiring Turner to be the new public defender for the 3rd District Circuit Court, a position held for almost six years by attorney Ken Coghlan who resigned last month. (October 7, 2010, Page 5)

Registration for November election ends Saturday

The last day to register to vote in the upcoming general election on Nov. 2 is this Saturday.

The Lafayette County Circuit Clerk’s Office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday to accommodate last-minute voter registrations.

Those wishing to vote absentee must have their ballots mailed in enough time for them to be at the Circuit Clerk’s Office by Nov. 1. The office will be open 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 to allow voters to come in and vote absentee. (September 29, 2010, Page 1)

Younger Scruggs asks court to vacate his conviction

In what appears to be an attempt to gain back his ability to practice law, David Zachery “Zach” Scruggs, is asking a federal court judge to vacate his conviction in a judicial bribery scheme that sent several attorneys to prison, including his father, noted former trial attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs. (August 20, 2010, Page 2A)
