Ribbon cut at Centerfire plant

Gov. Haley Barbour attended Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Winchester Centerfire plant building at the Lafayette County Industrial Park. The new 500,000 square-foot building is almost complete. About 1,000 new jobs are expected over the next five years. (October 13, 2011, Page 1)

New plant expands quickly

Winchester Ammunition has wasted no time in expanding its operations in Oxford with the new Centerfire plant. Gov. Haley Barbour will be in town Wednesday for a private ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new facility. It’s been less than a year since the company announced its plans to make a $100 milion investment in Oxford and create some 1,000 new jobs. (October 10, 2011, Page 1A)

‘The Help’ premiers; opens Aug. 10

OXFORD TOWN – The new film “The Help” opens Aug. 10 and many critics around the country have already seen it and are screaming its accolades. **UPDATE* Governor says election still on

Governor Haley Barbour has ordered the January 11, 2011 Special Election to proceed as scheduled.

“With inclement weather conditions lingering for voters in the northern parts of the State, we understand circumstances are not ideal for casting a ballot,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “We want to encourage voters to exercise caution to ensure safety when heading to the polls.”

Toyota restarts its engine

Disaster recover center to open in Abbeville

President Barack Obama has approved a federal disaster declaration for Lafayette County and five other northern Mississippi counties hit by severe weather earlier this month that killed six people, including an Abbeville woman.

A Disaster Recovery Center will be open at 8 a.m., Monday at Abbeville Baptist Church for residents to register for federal assistance.

“They need to come by and register and then they can find out what type of assistance they may be eligible for,” said Lafayette County Emergency Management Coordinator David Shaw.

Gov. Haley Barbour said Friday the declaration gives residents access to federal government assistance programs in Alcorn, Benton, Lafayette, Prentiss, Tippah and Tishomingo counties. (May 14, 2010)

Twister leaves death, destruction

The tornado that left one Abbeville woman dead and two homes destroyed was an EF 2 tornado, which means it was fast and powerful, according to the National Weather Service. The twister produced winds of up to 130 mph.
Two tornadoes were spawned by a supercell thunderstorm; the other hit Ashland where it killed three people. (May 3, 2010, Page 1A)
